Bob Beckwith, Crosman CEO, Talks To HAM – Part Two.

In Part Two of this exclusive interview, Crosman CEO Bob Beckwith talks to Hard Air Magazine Publisher Stephen Archer about the company and his plans for its future. Part One was published in Hard Air Magazine on May 1st.

Hard Air Magazine: Crosman has expanded into Europe in the past few years. How important are markets outside the USA to the company?

Bob Beckwith: We are part of a world-wide industry and have customers just about everywhere! Crosman has long had an international sales team and we’re investing in products and people to expand that. There’s market share to be gained in countries around the world, that makes worldwide input key for our new product development process, for example.

Hard Air Magazine: Crosman has pushed into the archery/crossbow market recently. Do you see this as the future of the company, rather than airguns?

Bob Beckwith: No, airguns are Crosman’s core business. But there are many opportunities in the outdoor enthusiast market and crossbows are a great example of how we are expanding into them.

Bob Beckwith, The CEO Of Crosman Corporation, Talks To HAM - Part One.

Hard Air Magazine: Crosman acquired LaserMax commercial operations in 2017. How can we expect to see laser technology impact Crosman airguns in future?

Bob Beckwith: We see the LaserMax market as completely separate from airguns. Both are outdoor businesses, but Lasermax has a firm firearms focus. And it’s clear that laser price points are not really compatible with the vast majority of our airgun products.

Hard Air Magazine: How does the Custom Shop concept play in Crosman’s high volume manufacturing environment?

Bob Beckwith: You know, it works better than you might think! Yes the Custom Shop is a one-at-a-time assembly process, but 90% of the parts used are common with other Crosman products. This means that it integrates seamlessly into our manufacturing operations. The aim with the Custom Shop is to give customers what they want. It also gives us a great insight into customer demand which can influence future product development.

Bob Beckwith, Crosman CEO, Talks To HAM - Part Two.

Hard Air Magazine: Crosman has had huge success selling the Challenger into Three Position sporter target shooting. How does precision competitive target shooting influence the company’s thinking about airgun development?

Bob Beckwith: We learn from listening to our customers and putting that knowledge into products. That’s how the Challenger was designed in the first place! Many kids gain skill, responsibility and confidence from 3P shooting through the JROTC and similar organizations. We’re proud that they can do that using a competitive, US designed and manufactured air rifle. Mark DeBoard – Crosman’s Shooting Sports Services Manager – puts a ton of time and effort into supporting competitive target shooting and his feedback gets transmitted back to our product development teams.

Hard Air Magazine: The Crosman 760 has sold for about $30 ever since it was introduced in 1966. And every one is still manufactured in the USA and tested before shipment. Given inflation, that’s an incredible performance. How does the company do it?

Bob Beckwith: I can tell you it’s not easy! We’ve only been able to achieve this by a huge effort from many great people in Crosman. Over the years we’ve changed materials, changed the design and utilized economies of scale. We’ve also benefitted from the LEAN manufacturing improvements we discussed earlier. And the 760 team has utilized low cost automation techniques too. And – here’s a scoop for you! – we’ll be launching a new version of the 760 in the near future. This will have more of a classic look than the current 760.

Hard Air Magazine: Crosman was early into the big bore market with the .357 Caliber Benjamin Rogue. How do you see the future for big bore (.30 cal and above) airguns going forward?

Bob Beckwith: Yes, the Rogue was our stating point in big bore. It was important because it gave the company a base to build from. The current Benjamin Bulldog is a highly successful air rifle for us. It came about through a redesign of the original Rogue. We kept the same caliber but took out the electronics and manufacturing cost, focusing hard on customer needs. We also made it more compact. Airguns like the Bulldog offer cost-effective hunting compared to firearms and in different seasons. We see the Bulldog and the Centerpoint Pioneer Airbow as complimentary products for the growing airgun hunting market.

Bob Beckwith, Crosman CEO, Talks To HAM - Part Two.

Hard Air Magazine: Do you think the “FPS races” have subsided now for mainstream air rifles? If so, what do you think will be the next differentiator?

Bob Beckwith: In my opinion, FPS will always be important to customers and the whole airgun industry. But hunters, in particular, understand that Ft/Lbs is a far more significant number and that will make Muzzle Energy a more important going forward. That’s why Crosman gives equal prominence to FPS and Ft/Lb numbers for our air rifles that can be used for hunting. Of course, accuracy is hugely important, but it’s very difficult to make concrete marketing claims for this as there’s so many variables out there when shooting.

Hard Air Magazine: Do you see the Pioneer Airbow as the precursor to a future range, or a one-off?

Bob Beckwith: The Airbow is a hugely innovative and competitive hunting product. We feel that it’s by far the most comprehensive and coherent air-powered archery product out there. Long-term, development of the Airbow platform depends on market acceptance. That’s acceptance both by users and by states as part of their hunting regulations. Personally, I think it’s going to be a great future that’s part of our strategic vision of serving the outdoor enthusiast.

Hard Air Magazine: Bob, Thanks for your time and answering these questions! I know that airgunners everywhere want to know about the latest from Crosman: you’ve given us a great overview on the company and where it’s going in future.

Bob Beckwith: Steve, it’s been great talking to you. But before you go, please take a little extra time and come down to see the manufacturing floor with me, there’s some things I’d like you to see…

The new SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun is now shipping and is in stores. HAM received its sample just yesterday. As we can see from the photograph below, this is a VERY close copy of the extremely popular SIG SAUER 1911 We The People centerfire pistol. This is the company’s tribute to the Second Amendment and features an aggressively aged appearance, together with a total of 50 stars on the grip plates.

It’s tough to tell, but the BB-firing version is the one on the right in the photograph below…

New SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun Now Available

… but it’s not so tough to tell the difference in the prices. The SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun has an MSRP of $119.99. The centerfire version lists for $1,481.00. This – among other things – makes the BB-firing version ideal as a cost-effective practice and training tool.

We’ll be running a comprehensive test review of this new air pistol very soon. Until then, here’s our first look at the SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun.

New SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun Now Available

At first sight, you might think that the SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun is another version of the existing SIG SAUER 1911 ASP models like the 1911 Spartan and the 1911 Max Michel. However, this is not so.

New SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun Now Available

Yes, all these guns are realistic replicas of SIG SAUER 1911 firearms. Yes, they all have a very similar weight and size. Yes they are all BB-firing semi autos with grip safeties.

However, the new SIG SAUER 1911 We The People CO2 BB Gun is actually manufactured by a different factory – in Taiwan instead of Japan – and is of a completely different internal design, as this high-level comparison of features illustrates:

Airgun Depot Adds New Definitive Guide To The Umarex MP40

The latest in the Definitive Guide series from Airgun Depot covers the Umarex MP40. (That’s HAM Publisher Stephen Archer having fun with his in the photograph above).

Airgun Depot Adds New Definitive Guide To The Umarex MP40

Now the correct manufacturer’s product name for this full auto BB gun is the Umarex Legends MP. However, it’s almost certainly called the Umarex MP40 by the majority of customers.

Hard Air Magazine produced a comprehensive test review of this gun last year. We were blown away by the realism of the gun. It has great feel, and realism. Accuracy is very good – in BB gun terms – and, of course, the full auto capability led to plenty of smiles per minute!

We gave the Umarex MP40 a HAM Gold Award with the highest score ever awarded for a pistol test review.

Pistol test review? Well, that “MP” designation in the name indicates it’s original German military designation of Maschinen Pistole – machine pistol – so we followed that lead.

Airgun Depot agrees with the HAM test results that Hornady Black Diamond BBs are the most accurate to use in this MP40 BB gun. They also advise that lead BBs and Dust Devils are less likely to shoot, or shoot well.

Airgun Depot Adds New Definitive Guide To The Umarex MP40

Airgun Depot’s Definitive Guide to the Umarex MP40 also gives some useful guidance on what to expect with a CO2-powered airgun, not just this one. Issues like lowered FPS in low ambient temperatures or as a result of rapid firing are understood by many, but there’s still some folk for whom this information is valuable as they are hearing it for the first time.

And, of course, the video that’s included in this Definitive Guide is a hoot, too, as the Airgun Depot team let rip with three MP40s at some seriously-threatening cereal boxes!

Have fun…

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

VALUE FOR MONEY

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets are a two part dedicated hunting pellet. Effectively, they combine a BB set into a lead skirt. At a typical Street Price of $6.45 for a tin of 100, these are expensive pellets at 6.45 Cents each. Of course, the price can be less if you buy them as part of the “buy four tins, get one free” deals offered by leading retailers.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

As these are hunting pellets, the price may not be a particularly important consideration, given that hunters normally make relatively few shots, compared to Field Target competitors, for example.

COMPARISON TO MAKERS CLAIMS

As is common with this manufacturer, there’s many claims made for the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets.

The front of the hang card says that these pellets have “Superior accuracy and penetration”. Also that they provide “Maximum shock”  and are “Ideal for hunting”.

As we can see from the soap block photographs below, the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets are able to combine considerable shock effect with considerable penetration. The steel BB penetrates well, while the lead part of the pellet expanded from 5.53mm diameter to 7.12 mm diameter in the ballistic soap.

This combination of effects does give credence to the apparently-contradictory claims of “superior penetration” and “maximum shock”. And this would, indeed, make them ideal for hunting.

Judging from the consistency measurements shown below of the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets tested by HAM, it’s unlikely that accuracy would be “superior”, however.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

The back of the packaging makes more claims. These include the statements that “Gamo is the world leading producer of precision lead ammunition for air rifles.” Also “Consistency, uniformity and performance are what makes Gamo ammunition superior to all others.”

So far, this is the first HAM test of Gamo pellets. However, it’s clear that the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets tested by HAM do not have superior consistency and uniformity, compared to other pellets we have tested.

It would be interesting to know what JSB and H&N’s response would be to the claim that Gamo pellets are “superior to all others”…

Gamo claims that there are 100 pellets in a tin of Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets. The tin tested by HAM contained 102 pellets.

CONSISTENCY

There was one malformed pellet in the tin of Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets tested by HAM.

Head diameter averaged 5.53 mm. 48% of the pellets tested actually had this head diameter. This is lower than average consistency.

However, head diameters varied from a minimum of 5.50 mm to a maximum of 5.56 mm. This variation in diameter of 1.10% is much worse than we have found in other pellet tests. However, this is the first HAM test of “two part” pellets, so it’s possible that this large variation in head diameter may be due to the need to force the steel  BB into the lead “skirt” of the pellet.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

Unfortunately, as can be seen from the following chart, weight consistency of the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets tested by HAM was also poor. The pellets tested by HAM varied in weight from 13.87 Grains to 14.58 Grains. The average weight was 14.25 Grains.

The most common weight measured was 14.27 Grains. 12% of the pellets tested had this weight. This is an average percentage.

However, the variation between the lightest and heaviest pellets was 5.10%, which is well below average.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

Overall length of the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets tested by HAM averaged 8.51mm. 20% of the tested pellets had lengths of 8.52 and 8.53 mm. This is an average figure.

The variation of 1.40% between the shortest and longest pellets tested is good, however, in spite of the possibility that overall length could be compromised by insertion of the steel BB into the lead skirt of these pellets.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

DIRTINESS

The tin of 100 Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets tested by HAM contained just 0.32 Grains of lead dust and dirt. This is a good score, these pellets are definitely cleaner than the average. The dirt photograph below confirms this measurement.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

DOWNRANGE PERFORMANCE

The Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets achieved an average Muzzle Velocity of 703.7 FPS when fired from our standard Beeman 1074 test rifle.

Our Chairgun chart, below, shows that the point of impact will be within plus or minus half an inch between 10 and 35 Yards range when fired from this gun. That’s about 25 Yards of effectively “flat” shooting.

They would show better with a higher-powered air rifle.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

HUNTING USE

The Ballistic Coefficient of 0.019, measured in HAM testing, indicates that these pellets would be suitable for shorter-range hunting. Already at 30 Yards range, the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets have lost 30% of their initial kinetic energy.

However, within their useful range, the Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets do penetrate well into the ballistic soap, with the steel BB separating from the lead skirt and traveling 6mm deeper.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

The wound channel was 9 mm diameter at the soap’s surface. This, together with the obvious flattening of the lead skirt on impact – shown below compared to an un-fired pellet – indicates that Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets would have a devastating effect on quarry at medium ranges.

BUYING AND OWNING

Gamo has excellent distribution, so this manufacturer’s pellets are widely available. You can expect to find Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets readily available online and in physical stores.

Notice, however, that Gamo is introducing new packaging designs across their pellets, so the packaging shown here may – or may not – correspond with Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 caliber pellets you buy in future.

Gamo Rocket 14.3 Grain .22 Caliber Pellet Test Review

The screw top tin is easy to use. The transparent lid provides excellent visual confirmation of the contents, although these is no confirmation of the type of pellet contained, once the tin is removed from the hang card packaging.

Understanding HAM Pellet Awards

HAM Pellet Awards come from the most rigorous, professional and comprehensive pellet testing by any independent publication. They are the result of much precise measurement and analysis using high precision measuring devices and highly-experienced testers.

Note that accuracy is a product of the complete “system” of airgun, scope, atmospheric conditions and shooter ability – not the pellet alone.

This means that no pellet test review can predict the accuracy of a particular pellet with YOUR individual air rifle. That’s why we do not measure accuracy in these pellet tests.

What HAM Pellet Awards do recognize is manufacturing consistency. Inconsistent pellets definitely will be inaccurate, consistent pellets are much more likely to be accurate.

HAM Awards also recognize value. There’s considerable variation in the price of airgun pellets. This means that an 8 cent pellet needs to score higher than a 2 cent pellet to achieve an award.

For full details of the HAM Pellet Award scoring methodology, please check out our Pellet Testing page.

For a full listing of HAM-tested Ballistic Coefficients, please see our Ballistic Coefficients page.

New Diana Outlaw PCP Air Rifle Video Review

$

This new Diana Outlaw PCP air rifle video review is from Airguns of Arizona. AoA is the US market warranty provider for the Outlaw and – together with Precision Airgun Distribution dealers – is the main sales outlet for this gun in the US. This means that Jared Clark’s review here can be considered as an “official” video review of the gun.

HAM tested the Diana Outlaw PCP air rifle recently in .22 caliber. We were impressed and awarded it a HAM Gold Award.

This AoA Diana Outlaw PCP air rifle video review also covers the .22 caliber model. We found best accuracy with 21.14 Grain H&N Baracuda Match pellets. Jared had best success with 15.89 Grain JSB Exact Jumbo Diabolo pellets.

This indicates that – like many PCP air rifles – the Diana Outlaw gives best accuracy with heavier, quality, domed lead pellets.

In this Diana Outlaw PCP air rifle video, Jared shows 40 consistent shots per fill. Actually, his shot count chart stopped there. It probably could have continued somewhat further. In HAM testing, we found closer to 50 consistent shots from this regulated PCP.

As you would expect, such differences in performance are relatively small. They reflect different performance characteristics from individual samples of “the same” gun.

Other variables include the different pellets used and different environmental circumstances for the test. (Pressure, temperature, humidity etc). And, don’t forget that individual chronys can also give different FPS readings. That’s why we standardize as many variables as possible for HAM test reviews, so that our test review results are comparable with each other!

For another Diana Outlaw PCP air rifle video, you can check out Steve Scialli’s YouTube review here. Although the precise performance numbers are slightly different in each case, you’ll see a similar pattern of performance. This is a very competent air rifle at the $500 price point.

Here’s a new airgun hunting video featuring the Umarex Gauntlet. It’s in the new Real Airgun Hunting TV channel that’s sponsored by Umarex USA.

Today Steve Criner takes us hunting with the Gauntlet in .22 caliber.

In this video, he’s hunting Rock Chucks on a ranch in Wyoming. Steve pulls the trigger 12 times in this video and harvests 12 rock chucks. His shots were taken at ranges from 15 to 52 Yards.

That’s great shooting!

You can see for yourselves that the quiet report of the Gauntlet meant that the critters were not aware of his activities and stayed around to be shot.

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

Just arrived in the HAM editorial offices is a FX Crown air rifle. This one is in blue laminate and the caliber is .177. It just has to be ideal for Field Target shooting!

Obviously the HAM Team will be exploring this FX Crown with a fine tooth comb over the next few weeks. But first, let’s see what you find when you open that large box that arrived by one of our favorite parcel delivery firms…

Absolute first impressions are: “Wow, this is heavy!”

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

And that’s true because the FX Crown air rifle is supplied in a large, heavy and very sturdy synthetic rifle case. Weight of the gun in its case is actually 11.5 Lbs.

The second impression is “ouch!”, because you need to be careful or you’ll break a finger nail when opening the push in/pull out-type case locks. Yip, I did that!

Third impression – after you have opened the case – is “Wow, that’s a beautiful airgun!” Yes, the FX Crown air rifle is a vision of pure beauty.

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

You reach in and pick up the Crown for the first time. Then your reaction is “Wow, this is light!” This FX Crown air rifle weighs-in at just 6 Lbs 15 Oz. It feels light, svelte and just wonderful to the touch.

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

It’s obvious that both wood and metal finishes are perfect: that’s absolutely P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

But where’s the magazine? It’s actually in a small plastic bag securely placed under the lower foam section of the case. And with it is the long-length female quick disconnect that’s required to fill the FX Crown air rifle with air. (It’s actually the same part that’s used with the Impact, for example).

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

Oh yes, and there’s a very nice Owner’s Manual. Being strong believers in “RTFM”, the HAM Team will be reading that before we start to review the gun itself.

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

We can see that there’s air in the carbon fiber HPA tank from the pressure gauge. Also clear is the regulator pressure, indicated by its own gauge.

Take a First Look at the FX Crown Air Rifle

All we need now is to mount a suitable scope and start shooting. Look out for the complete FX Crown air rifle test review in HAM, coming your way soon…

The Crosman American Classic Air Pistol, Part One

The Crosman American Classic air pistol had its origins back in the 1970s. Often known by its manufacturer’s model number as the Crosman 1377, it’s been manufacturer in huge numbers over the years. In this three-part review, Ron Jones takes a good look at this iconic air pistol and why it still has a place for today’s airgunner.

Take it away, Ron…

I just finished reading Stephen Archer’s interview with Crosman CEO Bob Beckwith. You’ll want to read that interview after you have finished digesting this story about the Crosman American Classic air pistol.

In that interview, Bob stated that one of the objectives of Crosman is to provide a product customers demand at an attractive price. Unless you are totally new to air guns, you no doubt know that the company has achieved that objective in the minds of most sportsmen who have had the pleasure of using one or more of their many fine products.

Recently I had the pleasure of reviewing Crosman’s CO2 powered target pistol, dubbed the 2300T. I had owned one of Crosman’s first CO2 pistols, the Model 111, circa 1953, and was anxious to see if the latest incarnation of that product was as fun to shoot as the handgun I remembered in my youth.

As it turned out, the model 2300 T was a step above my entry level gun…with accuracy and handling qualities you wouldn’t expect from a gun selling for $159.00. But CO2 has it’s shortcoming, and so the search was on for another Crosman gun without the limitation imposed by a CO2 power source.

As it turns out, Hard Air Magazine had never done a review of the Crosman American Classic 1377, variable pump pneumatic gun introduced, in spite of it having been introduced in 1977. We decided that there was no time like the present to correct that oversight!

The Crosman American Classic Air Pistol, Part One

Versatility

If there is one word which best describes the Crosman American Classic, its “Versatility”.

This gun will shoot airgun pellets ranging in weight from 5.4 to 10.6 grains, at velocities ranging from 375 to 600 feet per second. And it will do it with a degree of accuracy normally equated with gun above it’s $60.00 price point.

Combine that with light weight (2 Lbs), portability and durable construction, and you have a gun with great utility. Basement target shooters, back yard plinkers and rodent hunters will find the gun perfect for their needs. Survivalists could certainly consider carrying the gun in areas where dangerous animals are not a consideration.

Construction

I would label the Crosman American Classic “field grade” in terms of fit and finish. Crosman has tastefully combined their rifled steel barrel and internal action with a polymer stock and synthetic sights.

UPS was not particularly kind to the carton containing the gun shipped to me by Crosman, so when I opened the shipping box I expected to see damage to the gun. Except for a rear sight which was slightly askew, the gun was otherwise unscathed.

My Leatherman style Multi-purpose tool quickly centered the rear sight…and the first pellets out of the barrel at 5 meters were right on target.

The Crosman American Classic Air Pistol, Part One

In a word, the Crosman American Classic is RUGGED! It’s pretty much as close to indestructible as you can get with any mechanical device. You can toss it in your duffel with an assortment of pellets and your travel gear…knowing that when you arrive at your destination the gun will be ready to join you on your trek into the wilderness.

Slip it in the game pouch of your hunting jacket and you’ll be prepared to pop that Grouse roosting in a conifer providing the season is open and you have a license.

The Crosman American Classic Air Pistol, Part One

This Crosman American Classic and a tin of Crosman Copper Magnums is going into my back pack the next time I head into the woods with the pups.

Cocking Effort

The cocking effort for the Crosman American Classic is light to moderate. It really depends on the number of pumps you choose for the shot.

Those with a strong grip can no doubt generate 10 pumps of power without breaking a sweat. Almost anyone can generate 3-5 pumps of pressure for repeat shots without stress.

The Crosman American Classic Air Pistol, Part One

I wanted to measure the pumping effort so that others could envision how hard it is to pump the gun. So I padded my spring -operated kitchen scale and used it to measure the pumping force. First pumps measured about 13 Lbs of force to complete the pump cycle. That compares to about 35-40 Lbs of effort for many spring powered, break barrel rifle.

Sights

The Crosman American Classic is equipped with standard post front sight and adjustable, open rear sight.

Horizontal and vertical adjustments are accomplished by loosening a screw, moving the rear sight and then re-tightening the screws. No reference scale is available to quantify the vertical adjustment, but small hash marks help in estimating the horizontal adjustment.

I used the universally accepted SWAG method to make my adjustments. It works!

The rear sight notch, adjustable vertically, can be rotated 180 degrees to offer an aperture sight for those who have converted their Crosman American Classic to a carbine. My sight shoots dead center targets at 5 yards with the rear sight perfectly centered horizontally at it’s lowest setting. Nice job, Crosman!

Grips

Until 2015, there were complaints among some owners that the grips were “loose”, and no amount of grip screw tightening would correct the problem.

The company’s web site states that the grips were improved in 2015. I can attest to the fact that the latest incarnation of the Crosman American Classic grip possesses favorable ergonomic and is firmly secured to the frame.

Despite the somewhat muzzle heavy design which results from the 10 inch barrel and elongated forend, I found the Crosman American Classic to be wonderfully stable during shot execution.

Particularly on those long sitting or kneeling shots at game or field targets, I found the balance of the Crosman American Classic improves accuracy over handguns with shorter traditional barrels.

Noise Level

Without a doubt, this is one of the quietest air handguns I have ever shot, particularly at the 4-5 pumps level. I could hardly wait to set up my Chronograph to make sure velocity levels were as advertised. They were.

After shooting some “1000 FPS” break barrel air rifles, this was a welcome surprise. On a hypothetical air gun muzzle blast scale of one to ten, I’d have to rate this a three. This makes the Crosman American Classic absolutely perfect for those who live in areas where a neighbor might object to gun noise.

Target Velocity Ballistics

We’ll talk more about sighting in the gun in part Two of this Three Part series, but I wanted you to have a Ballistic/Trajectory table to help you understand the limitations of the gun with 4-5 pumps of power using Crosman Premier 7.9 grain pellets.

Out to 10 yards, 400 FPS muzzle velocity will keep you in the Bull.

Airgun News From 2018 ISSF World Cup

The first day of competition at the International Shooting Sport Federation 2018 ISSF World Cup in Fort Benning opened on a promising note for the U.S. team. 2016 Olympic air rifle gold medalist Ginny Thrasher (Springfield, Virginia, above) posting a world-class Qualification score to qualify for her first Final since 2016.

Thrasher qualified for the Women’s Air Rifle Final at the 2018 ISSF World Cup in seventh place with a world-class score of 627.4, but with eventual silver medalist Yingjie Zhu of China posting a world-record Qualification score of 633.4, the competition at this World Cup was proving to be fierce.

“I feel like lately I’ve had really good technique, good equipment and really good positions, but I feel like it hasn’t translated yet to the matches,” said Thrasher.

“I felt like today was a great step in the right direction to just let go and perform. I did the right things, I came off the line, and when I got back I fixed my NPA and went back shooting the best I could. Found that rhythm and ended up shooting really high, 10-point scores for a long time.”

Once in the 2018 ISSF World Cup Final, the trio of Chinese athletes shot to the front of the pack early in the first few strings of shots. Though Thrasher’s last shot in the Final was a 10.8, it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead put forth by the eventual Chinese medalists and Thrasher finished in fifth place.

Also competing in Women’s Air Rifle at the 2018 ISSF World Cup, Emily Holsopple (Wilcox, Pennsylvania) finished in 26th place (621.7) and Elizabeth Gratz (Siegel, Illinois) finished in 34th place (618.4).

Mingyang Wu of China won gold and Ruozhu Zhao, also of China, won bronze.

In Men’s Air Pistol at the 2018 ISSF World Cup, 18-year-old Jack Leverett III (Bainbridge, Georgia) was the top finisher for the U.S. in 28th place with a score of 570. James Hall (Anniston, Alabama) finished in 46th place with a score of 562 and Jason Herndon (Missoula, Montana) finished in 49th place with a score of 558.

The first of two stages (Precision) was contested today in the Women’s Sport Pistol event. Brenda Silva (Snowflake, Arizona) scored a 288, 2012 Olympian Sandra Uptagrafft(Phenix City, Alabama) scored a 287 and 17-year-old Katelyn Abeln (Douglasville, Georgia) scored a 277. Finals in this event and the Rapid Fire stage were contested tomorrow at the weekend.

2018 ISSF World Cup airgun competition continued with the Men’s Three-Position Rifle and Women’s Sport Pistol Qualifications and Finals.

The 2018 ISSF World Cup for Rifle and Pistol concludes on May 15. More than 350 athletes from 53 nations are competing at this event in the 10 Olympic Rifle and Pistol events.
