Giles Brings Us His Daystate Red Wolf Video Review

$

0

The new Daystate Red Wolf first broke cover at the 2018 SHOT Show as a “Serie Rosso” limited edition version. We saw it again at the 2018 IWA OutdoorClassics show in Germany, this time in a classic walnut stock.

And now we have this video review from the AirGunGearShow’s Giles Barry featuring the same gun in regular red laminated stock form.

In his usual inimitable style, Giles takes us through the features and benefits of the company’s latest, range-leading model. He loves the styling, finish, trigger and – well – everything about the Daystate Red Wolf!

Actually, Giles has two Daystate Red Wolf air rifles. One is a US-specification high power model in .22 caliber. The other is a UK-spec sub-12 Ft/Lb gun. They look very similar from the outside – just a longer barrel gives the game away.

The Daystate Red Wolf is electronically-controlled and regulated – of course.

This gives no less than 450 consistent .177 caliber shots per fill for the UK-specification gun in .177 caliber. That’s at the sub-12 Ft/Lbs power level to comply with UK laws.

The US-spec .22 caliber model has a maximum Muzzle Energy of 36 Ft/Lbs. This is attained with 80 consistent shots on High Power setting. However, it can also be set to give 160 consistent shots per fill at 26 Ft/Lbs or 260 – yes, two hundred and sixty – consistent shots at 24 Ft/Lbs on low power.

Giles feels that the Red Wolf delivers a lot of changes compared to his original Air Wolf MCT. He still loves his Air Wolf, but he’s gone crazy over the Red Wolf!

Pyramyd Air Introduces the 22 Caliber Club

$

0

Pyramyd Air has launched a new promotion called the 22 Caliber Club.

When you see the 22 Caliber Club Symbol on the product page at pyramydair.com, you know that it will ship out within 22 hours of your purchase. And if doesn’t, Pyramyd Air will credit $5 in Bullseye Bucks instantly to your account.

And, before anyone asks, yes this promotion does not only apply to .22 caliber products! Wherever you see a product on the Pyramyd Air website displaying the 22 Cal Club logo, the promotion applies. Even if its a scope or other product that has no caliber!

To participate, Pyramyd Air explains that you simply order an item that is in stock – simply look for the 22 Caliber Club icon on the product page.  Then, they will do their best to make sure the item leaves our dock within 22 hours or less – or you get $5 in Bullseye Bucks added to your account.

22 Caliber Club

The 22 Caliber Club works like this…

At the time your order is placed, a date/timestamp will be recorded. An ending date/timestamp will be recorded when the shipment tracking number is issued. That’s how they calculate the 22 hours.

Of course, the hours for Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays are not included in the 22-hour calculation.

As you’d expect, there are some reasonable exclusions from the Club. These include, but are not limited to:
– Orders needing customer verification to complete processing.
– Orders including items for product service, inspection or installation.
– Orders for out-of-stock or special order products.
– Orders scheduled for local pick-up.
– Changes to an order after it is submitted and approved for shipment may cause processing delays and cause the order to be ineligible for the .22 Caliber Club.

There’s some other stuff, too…

Pyramyd Air reserves the right to suspend the 22 Caliber Club shipping program at any time. Pyramyd Air also reserves the right to suspend any order from the 22 Caliber Club shipping program if fraud or other abuse is suspected.

So, next time you’re shopping at Pyramyd Air, check out the 22 Caliber Club!

Arkansas Game & Fish Commission Approves Big Bore Air Rifle Hunting

$
0
0

The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission has unanimously passed new general hunting regulations that allow big bore air rifle hunting. Specifically, the use of big bore air rifles for harvesting whitetail deer during modern gun season.

This rule change, effective immediately for the upcoming hunting season, will allow pre-charged pneumatic airguns .40 caliber and larger which produce muzzle energy greater than 400 Ft/Lbs to be used in hunting whitetail deer. Additionally, the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission requires that the projectile used in these big bore air rifles be capable of expansion upon impact with its target.

While most states do allow hunting of small game with air rifles, Arkansas is the tenth state that has approved the use of big bore air rifles for hunting big game species.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission’s research, study and proactive approach regarding the allowance of highly effective big bore air rifle hunting for Arkansas whitetail.” said Richard Turner, President of Umarex USA. “The timing is perfect for the introduction of the .50 caliber Umarex Hammer which we’re making at our facility in Fort Smith, Arkansas”

Above. Our photograph shows Bradley Burgin of Umarex USA showing the Umarex Hammer at the 2018 SHOT Show. You can see Steve Criner hunting bobcat in Texas at night with the Umarex Hammer in this episode of Real Airgun Hunting.

The world’s most powerful production air rifle, the Umarex Hammer, is being made by airgun manufacturer, Umarex USA, based in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This pre-charged pneumatic air rifle generates up to 705 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle and has been used on hunts for several large deer species including red stag, fallow, and axis buck. The .50 caliber Hammer has also been used to harvest an American bison, Canadian black bear, wild hog, African simitar oryx and wildebeest.

Umarex says they developed the .50 caliber Hammer to offer hunters an alternative to firearms and archery for the safe and humane harvesting of big game species. The Hammer allows hunters a quieter experience when compared to either primitive or modern rifle platforms, they say.

This regulation change goes into effect immediately for the 2018 season in the state of Arkansas. Umarex USA is working in conjunction with the Airgun Sport Association and many state regulatory agencies in an effort to open big bore air rifle hunting in states where it is not currently allowed.

A Close Look At The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 Scope

$

About this time last year, HAM ran a story about the new Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 scope. Then it was newly introduced. So why are we talking about it again today? Well, finally we have one here in the HAM offices and we can look at some of its features in more detail.

In fact, there are two Aztec Emerald scope models available. The other is quite similar and has the same 50mm objective size. However, it features a 3-18x zoom range. Both are the same price, so you can take your choice!

A Close Look At The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 Scope

And there’s definitely a big update to our previous story…

It’s fine for us to give our impressions of this – or any – scope, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, or should that be in the shooting? Well the overall 2017 Extreme Benchrest competition was won using an Aztec Emerald scope. You can’t have a much better recommendation than that for any item of airgun equipment!

Having this Aztec Emerald scope in our hands also gives us a much better chance to explain exactly what you get for your money. About $400, to be precise.

A Close Look At The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 Scope

The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 scope comes very well packed in a solid card carton. That’s important as it needs to pass through the “loving care” of one of our finest parcels shipment companies on its way to you. Airguns of Arizona’s quality packaging of their shipments helps here too, of course.

This Aztec Emerald scope is supplied with a set of “bikini” lens covers for transit. There’s also a couple of flip-up lens caps for regular use and a 4-inch diameter sidewheel. This sidewheel can be attached to the side parallax-control turret. It carries no distance markings but is ready tor you to add your own.

A Close Look At The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 Scope

The pull out/push in elevation and windage turrets work well. These are low profile and resettable for zero, too. Each click of the turrets gives a change of 1/4 MOA through the very sharp reticle.

A Close Look At The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 Scope

The red marks on the zoom ring of Aztec Emerald scopes indicate the magnification settings at which the reticle provides true MOA correction. These are 9x and 18x. Knowing this is important as – like every other second focal plane scope available – the slash markings of the Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 scope’s reticle change with the zoom magnification set.

We attached the Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 scope to a Diana Outlaw air rifle and the resulting combination balanced well. It certainly gave us good results when the scope was mounted to the gun using 30mm SportsMatch rings.

A Close Look At The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25 x 50 Scope

Aztec Emerald scopes carry an outstanding Aztec Gold Lifetime warranty too.

We’re going to be shooting this Aztec Emerald/Diana Outlaw a lot more…

This next World Cup event in Germany is crucial to the preparation of the USA Shooting Team as it is the last in the ISSF season for US airgun shooters prior to the ISSF World Championship August 31 – September 15 in Changwon, South Korea. The World Championship is the first opportunity for countries to earn valuable quotas for the 2020 Olympic Games. (essentially a country’s ticket to participate in a given event in the Olympic Games).

The Mixed Air Pistol Team of Alexis Lagan (Boulder City, Nevada) and Nick Mowrer (Butte, Montana) – pictured above – will be looking to get on the podium in Germany. They were one of the top finishes in Fort Benning for the U.S. team, placing fourth in the Mixed Air Pistol Team event.

CMP Awards $151,000 in Scholarships to Student Athletes for 2018-2019 School Year

$

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has awarded $151,000 to outstanding junior marksmen – many of them airgun shooters. These CMP Awards have been made through its Scholarship Program and are to be used for the 2018-2019 term.

A total of 279 applications were received for these CMP Awards this year. In all, 151 CMP awards were granted to both junior males and females.

The $1,000 CMP Scholarships are available to graduating high school JROTC, 4-H and other junior shooting club members. Many are air rifle shooters.

Scholarship applications for CMP Awards are only accepted if they are received completed and if the applicant is a U.S. citizen, shows good moral character, is a contributing member to society and is a scholar marksman.

In April, CMP board members and staff carefully sorted through piles of applications to determine which young marksmen would receive scholarships for the coming academic year.

Of the 239 fully-completed applications reviewed for CMP Awards, 106 were submitted by female juniors and 133 by male. Students from Florida submitted the most, with 23, followed by Virginia (19) and Georgia (15). Hawaii, Alaska and overseas military posts were also represented in the process, with a total of 21 combined submissions.

In addition to the scholarships awarded to talented marksmen across the country, local scholarships were awarded to athletes near the CMP offices in the Port Clinton, Ohio, and Talladega, Ala. Seven were awarded in Alabama and nine were awarded in Ohio.

The CMP is dedicated to its commitment to youth programs and furthering the education of the successful young adults involved within them. Through these scholarships, the CMP is able to uphold its goal of awarding those who present exceptional talent, determination and citizenship within the field of marksmanship.

All junior marksmen are encouraged to stay focused on their academic careers as well as in becoming involved with their communities and other positive extra-curricular activities. The CMP is proud to provide support to junior marksmen in their continuing education and helping to shape their fulfilling futures.

To review all of the selected CMP Awards, click on the 2018 Scholarship Recipients link at http://thecmp.org/communications/cmp-scholarship-program/.

Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission Approves Big Bore Airgun Hunting for 2018

$

0

The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission has announced that – starting with the 2018 season – big bore airgun hunting with PCP air guns .35 caliber or larger will be legal means of take for Deer, Elk, and Bear during the Tennessee Modern Gun Season.

Crosman Corporation explains that this big bore airgun hunting approval will include airguns such as the .357 Caliber Benjamin Bulldog. In addition, the Benjamin Pioneer Airbow will be legal means to harvest Deer, Elk, Bear and Turkey during the Modern Gun Season for all hunters and during the archery season for disabled hunters.

“The action of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission to allow big bore airgun hunting for the take of big game is an incredible testament the maturation that is happening across the county,” said Jay Duncan Director of Marketing for Crosman Corporation.

“Not only is airgun technology maturing to the point that it provides hunters a new, exciting and ethical means of take, but regulatory officials are open to broadening opportunities to put new hunters in the field – as you can see in this video…”

Tennessee joins a growing list of states allowing the use of big bore airgun hunting and/or the Airbow during their hunting seasons.

Florida, Texas, Arizona, Virginia, Missouri, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Washington State allow big game animals to be legally taken with the Airbow. Feral hogs can be taken in Georgia, Florida and Texas while coyotes and other predators may be hunted with the Airbow in over 30 states. Georgia and South Carolina allow the Airbow to be used for alligator hunting.

Crosman continues to work with the Airgun Sporting Association to lead efforts to educate legislators and regulators about the efficacy of big bore airgun hunting and the Airbow for the ethical take of big game.

“The Airgun Sporting Association is committed to working with our state wildlife agency partners across the country to expand the use of airguns for hunting,” said J. Mitch King President and CEO of Airgun Sporting Association.

“This action by the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission to legalize the use of big bore airgun hunting (35 caliber and larger) in Tennessee will provide Tennessee hunters with a new and exciting opportunity for hunting in their state.  The Association and the airgun industry applauds the Commission for their action and we look forward to supporting our state wildlife agency partners in their efforts toward wildlife management and the growth of hunting and recreational shooting.”

New FX Crown Synthetic Model Featured In Latest Airgun Depot Video

The Airgun Depot and FX Airguns USA teams get together for this new video about the FX Crown Synthetic Model PCP air rifle. It’s available now for pre-order…

The FX Crown Synthetic model was announced at the 2018 IWA OutdoorClassics exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany. HAM brought you details of the gun directly from the show, of course!

The synthetic stock allows FX Airguns to bring a lower-priced version of the Crown to customers. It also gives a stock that will tolerate the knocks, bangs and dents that often appear over time with wood stocked airguns.

HAM has a .177 caliber laminated wood stock Crown in-house for testing and we’ll bring you this full review soon. But here you can see a thorough review of the forthcoming synthetic stock model.

Then Jon and Travis go head to head in a 200 Yard golf ball shootout. Who wins? You’ll just have to watch the video to find out!

And there’s more information about the FX Crown Synthetic model in this “Definitive Guide” to the complete Crown line that’s been published by Airgun Depot.

H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 Caliber Pellet Test Review

$

VALUE FOR MONEY

H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets have a very unusual design. It’s a “domed cylinder” shape that includes a “pleated” skirt, obviously to engage the barrel’s rifling. There’s little sign of the traditional diablo shape we associate with airgun pellets.

This is a very long and heavy pellet, designed for long range hunting. But the high – 0.025 – Ballistic Coefficient makes these H&N Sniper Magnum  pellets also very suitable for Field Target competition, if your air rifle’s barrel likes them.

H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 Caliber Pellet Test Review

For such a specialist pellet, the price is not high. At just 3.33 Cents each, H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets are only a little more expensive than the average for .177 caliber pellets.

COMPARISON TO MAKERS CLAIMS

The manufacturer claims that H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets are supplied in tins of 300. The tin tested by HAM contained 302 pellets. A happy over-delivery by H&N!

The claimed weight for these pellets is 14.97 Grains. The average weight of the pellets tested by HAM was 14.94 Grains. That’s just 0.02% from the claim and identical for all practical purposes.

H&N also claims that Sniper Magnum pellets are exceptionally accurate and suitable for hunting all kinds of game at long ranges. They also say that the pellet’s special shape reduces drag which results in a flat trajectory and excellent downrange energy.

Of course, accuracy will be a systems combination of pellet and gun, particularly the barrel. However, there’s every indication that the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets will be accurate in a powerful air rifle.

In HAM testing, we established a Ballistic Coefficient of 0.025 for the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets. This is a very high figure for .177 caliber. The result is a flat trajectory and high retained energy downrange, just as claimed by H&N.

No damaged pellets were found in the tin of H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets tested by HAM.

Head diameter was extremely well controlled. In fact the 50-pellet sample tested by HAM featured only two diameters – 4.50 mm and 4.51 mm. Fully 72% of the pellets tested had the 4.51 mm head diameter, as you can see from the chart below. The variation between the smallest and largest dead diameters was thus just 0.22% – far above average.

That’s outstanding consistency!

H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 Caliber Pellet Test Review

Most heavy pellets tested by HAM achieve their weight partially by having oversize head diameters. Refreshingly, this is not the case with the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets. They combine heavy weight with regular head sizes.

The average weight of the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets was 14.94 Grains. However, weight consistency was not as good as the consistency of head diameters. The variation between the lightest and heaviest pellets tested by HAM was 2.70%. That’s actually a reasonably average figure among the pellets tested by HAM.

The most common weights were 14.83 Grains and 14.94 Grains. In each case, 10% of the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets tested by HAM had these weights. Only one pellet – that’s 2% – actually weighed exactly the claimed 14.97 Grains.

As always, all pellets were weighed using HAM’s incredibly-precise, laboratory-grade, milligram balance. This gives precise, accurate and consistent measurements.

Average length of the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets tested by HAM was 8.22 mm. 16% of the pellets tested had the most common length of 8.23 mm, as you can see from the chart below.

Obviously that one, short pellet was unfortunate. It caused the difference between the shortest and longest pellets tested by HAM to be 2.09%, which is rather less than average.

DIRTINESS

In any pellet-manufacturing process, a certain amount of dirt, dust and junk inevitably finds its way into the tin. However the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets were extremely clean – about the cleanest un-coated lead pellets the HAM Team has ever tested.

The photograph below shows the results of carefully washing the pellets. There’s almost no residue there at all. In fact, it’s 0.0035 Grains of dirt for every 100 pellets.

This is excellent performance from H&N!

DOWNRANGE PERFORMANCE

Using the Chairgun software package to analyze downrange performance, we can see that the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets perform very well.

The high Ballistic Coefficient delivers effectively flat trajectory between 9 Yards and 33 Yards, even using HAM’s standard Beeman 1074 test gun.

With a more powerful air rifle, performance would be even more impressive.

HUNTING USE

The Chairgun data shows that the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets retain 70% of their Kinetic Energy at 39 Yards downrange and 60% still even at 56 Yards. This performance justifies H&N’s claim that these pellets are suitable for long range hunting.

As we can see from the photograph below, the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellet achieved record penetration in our ballistic soap test. The entry hole in the soap was 7 mm diameter.

This pellet shrank on impact from 8.20 mm long to 8.08 mm – a slight reduction of 1.5%. The diameter increased from 4.50 mm to 4.55 mm – about 1%.

The strong penetration and small expansion delivered by the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets indicates that they would probably be most effective against larger game. They would blow clean through a smaller bird or animal, particularly at close ranges.

BUYING AND OWNING

H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets are packed in the manufacturer’s standard, screw-top tin. This is convenient and easy to use. The HAM team much prefers screw-top tins to push-on versions. At least so long as the screw tops are easy enough to turn – which H&N’s are…

There was no padding inside the tin. However the Sniper Magnum pellets suffered no damage in transit, in spite of there being some free space that allowed them to rattle around somewhat. Clearly these are robust pellets.

As a specialist product, H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 Grain .177 caliber pellets are not likely to be available in your local big box sporting goods store. However, that’s not a great disadvantage as they are easily obtained from online airgun specialists such as Pyramyd Air.

Understanding HAM Pellet Awards

HAM Pellet Awards come from the most rigorous, professional and comprehensive pellet testing by any independent publication. They are the result of much precise measurement and analysis using high precision measuring devices and highly-experienced testers.

Note that accuracy is a product of the complete “system” of airgun, scope, atmospheric conditions and shooter ability – not the pellet alone.

This means that no pellet test review can predict the accuracy of a particular pellet with YOUR individual air rifle. That’s why we do not measure accuracy in these pellet tests.

What HAM Pellet Awards do recognize is manufacturing consistency. Inconsistent pellets definitely will be inaccurate, consistent pellets are much more likely to be accurate.

HAM Awards also recognize value. There’s considerable variation in the price of airgun pellets. This means that an 8 cent pellet needs to score higher than a 2 cent pellet to achieve an award.

For full details of the HAM Pellet Award scoring methodology, please check out our Pellet Testing page.
