It’s only a couple of days since product availability was announced, but an Umarex Zelos PCP air rifle has just arrived here at the HAM offices for review. Let’s take a look…
My first immediate observation is that the Zelos feels light and compact to handle. The 36-Inch overall length is clearly a big benefit here.
The second is that the high-capacity (22 rounds in .22 caliber) is very well integrated into the design. There’s no major projection from the action on either side, so left-handers will like this.
However the pellets do tend to rattle in the magazine somewhat when the gun is moved around. This is undoubtedly because – so far – I have just loaded and shot relatively short H&N Field Target Trophy pellets. The mag seems sized for longer pellets, which is good. They may rattle less. we’ll find out…
Also there’s no ability to accurately judge how many shots are still loaded. But overall I like the magazine so far.
Third is that the AT15-type pistol grip is comfortable and pleasantly “grippy”. I like the feel and texture.
Then there’s the cocking lever. Although I have made less than 50 cycles so far, it definitely feels good and surprisingly silky in operation for an air rifle of this price level.
I also find the safety positive and easy-to-use. However it’s operated from the right side only. We’ll need to see left-handed HAM tester Doug Rogers’ opinion of this…
For sighting, I mounted a Hawke Airmax 4-12 x 40 AO scope on the top Picatinny rail. This seemed to be about the right size and price to match the Zelos. The balance was good, too.
The scope is mounted using Leapers Accu-Sync cantilever rings. The set I have is in Flat Dark Earth finish. I rather like the racy lines and contrasting finish of the rings. But that’s a personal opinion, of course.
In addition, there’s a relatively long lower Picatinny tail that’s clamped directly onto the HPA pressure tube. I mounted a Leapers UTG Rubber Armored bipod here.
Another positive impression was made by the easy-to-read gauge face plates. The rear gauge indicates the pressure. It reads 2,000 PSI, which is the factory reg setting pressure.
Next to it is the de-gassing screw. This is another very useful feature that’s not present on all PCP air rifles, but which is very useful to have when you need it.
So those are some first thoughts on the new Umarex Zelos PCP air rifle. There’s bound to be more to come as we move forward with the full, comprehensive HAM test review in the near future.
The Zelos has an MSRP of $599.99. Of course you can buy it from Pyramyd. But this could be a great reason to redeem some of your HAM Airgun Points for a purchase in the Umarex USA online store and save 20%. You could redeem more HAM Airgun Points for a 20% saving on a scope in the Hawke online store, too. Just saying…
