The latest goodie to arrive in the HAM offices is an unusual, but very interesting new model, the Weihrauch HW44 PCP air pistol. Obviously we will be running a full review in the near future, but first, let’s take a close look at this new airgun.
The Weihrauch HW44 PCP air pistol is available in a “FAC” version for the US market. FAC is the abbreviation for “Fire Arms Certificate”. This is a British term meaning that an airgun is powerful enough to exceed the legal limit of power for airguns in the UK. (That’s 12 Ft/Lbs for air rifles and 6 Ft/Lbs for air pistols).
As the claimed power of the US-specification HW44 is 25 Joules – that’s over 18 Ft/Lbs – it’s clearly waaaay above the UK legal limit for any airgun…
In fact, the Weihrauch HW44 PCP air pistol is essentially a compact version of the HW110 PCP air rifle.
It uses the same magazines, has the same sidelever cocking system and is clearly based on the same – or a very similar – receiver. There’s the same convenient ambidextrous safety lever system, too.
First thoughts upon picking-up the Weihrauch HW44 PCP air pistol are these:
Wow, it’s BIG!
Wow, it’s much lighter than it looks!
Wow, that grip is really comfortable!
The BIG part is due to the overall length of 19-Inches with the supplied moderator in place.
The much lighter part is due to the extensive use of ballistic polymer for the receiver, stock and other parts. It looks good, is practical and – as Glocks seem to work and sell very well using similar materials – it should be durable in this airgun.
Although the Weihrauch HW44 PCP air pistol is fitted with open sights, we threw a Leapers UTG red dot sight onto the gun. The red dot certainly seems to balance well on the HW44, but immediately we can see that it’s probably a good idea to reverse the Weaver/Picatinny mount of the sight.
This will place the locking levers on the opposite side and give more space for fingers to operate the sidelever cocking mechanism without curses!
The Weihrauch HW44 PCP air pistol was supplied to us by Pyramyd Air including two magazines, a fill probe, an Allen (hex) wrench and a very nice black, padded case. This is how the gun will reach you, too.
Stay tuned for our detailed review in future…
