Well, OK, this is actually a second look at the new Barra 250z PCP air rifle! Hard Air Magazine readers actually first saw it in our report from the 2024 SHOT Show back in January.

But now we have a pre-production gun here in-house and can give more information for the first time. Plus – as of today – HAM Readers can place a pre-order on the Barra website to get yours as soon as they are available.

First Look At The New Barra 250z PCP Air Rifle

The HAM testers were very impressed with Barra’s first move into the PCP market. The Barra 1100z was a HAM Gold Award winner as it offered an excellent balance of price with quality.

Now the company is moving further upmarket in the PCP world with the 250z. This is unusual on two counts…

Barra 250z PCP Air Rifle

Firstly it is a bolt action gun, unusual in 2024 with the plethora of sidelever actions around.

Secondly, it has the HPA tank in a tube around the barrel. That tank has a 322 cc capacity and a maximum fill pressure of 3.625 PSI.

That HPA tank position means that there’s no separate HPA tube or tank below the barrel. It also means that the degassing screw is in the top of the gun, within the Picatinny rail.

In fact, there are actually six versions of the Barra 250z, as we can see in the following table.

Of course, the Barra 250z PCP air rifle is regulated. The adjustment screw can be seen between the two gauges in the underside of the stock. As expected, one gauge indicates the HPA tube fill pressure , the other shows the regulator pressure.

Hammer spring tension can be adjusted by removing the AR15-style buttstock and turning the screw.

The manufacturer’s claims are for the obligatory 1,000 FPS in .22 caliber. That’s 900 FPS in .25 cal.

More usefully, Barra Airguns tells HAM that they are seeing 940 FPS with 20.2 Grain slugs in .22 cal. That’s 40 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy. In .25 caliber, the numbers are 840 FPS with 33.95 Grain slugs for 53 Ft/Lbs. So it’s going to be a pretty potent air rifle!

Pellet feed is via rotary magazine. The capacity is 10 shots in .22 caliber, 9 shots in .25. There’s also a single shot tray.

At HAM, we paired the Barra 250z with a high quality Sightron S-TAC 3-16 x 42 scope and Leapers UTG PRO rings. The overall weight for this rig was 8 Lbs 9 Oz. It feels lighter than that, however somewhat more muzzle-heavy than we are used to.

HAM will be running our comprehensive, industry-leading review on the Barra 250z PCP Air Rifle in the near future. But if you want to get in first, you can pre-order today from the Barra website here.

The price is $440.00.

Please note that – as we are looking at a pre-production model – there may be some slight differences compared to the final, production guns. However these should not be very significant from the appearance perspective.
