Bob’s Guide To Tuning Unregulated PCPs

$

Today, HAM’s Technical Editor, Bob Sterne gives the benefit of his experience in tuning unregulated PCPs.

In previous articles in this series I talked about how air pressure, barrel length, hammer strike and port size affect the power output of a PCP airgun. For the most part, the manufacturer sets those parameters, or you may have chosen to modify them to meet your needs. So, now you have a given setup, capable of a given performance, and you want to optimize that performance by “tuning”.

For this article on tuning unregulated PCPs, we will assume that the fine tuning will be done by varying the hammer strike.

Generally, this is done by changing the hammer spring preload, or by adjusting the gap between the spring and hammer to change the “free flight” and cocking distance, if you are using an SSS or SSG. Both systems have the same net effect. More preload or a smaller gap increases the hammer strike, and vice versa.

Before we get into the details of tuning unregulated PCPs, let me deal with one other thing…. pellet weight.

Generally in PCPs, a heavier pellet, while reducing the velocity, will actually increase the FPE. However, if you go too far, the gun simply cannot keep up with the demands, and the FPE will eventually fall, like this:

Bob’s Guide To Tuning Unregulated PCPs

In that particular gun, once the pellet weight exceeded 80 gr. the FPE began to decrease. The point is that you can’t keep increasing pellet weight forever in the quest for more power, without other (often drastic) modifications to the gun.

The Basics of Tuning Regulated PCPs

Once you have chosen a pellet that meets your needs, the basic parameters of the gun are set. Now you will want to know how to optimize your gun within that.

The first thing you need to know is that there is more than one “right answer” when tuning unregulated PCPs! Oh, great! Another decision to make!

Consider the chart below, noting that for each shot string there is a corresponding colored line showing the pressure drop:

Bob’s Guide To Tuning Unregulated PCPs

First, look at the black string on the upper left. This gun can use up to an 1800 psi fill, and with the hammer spring preload set 2 turns out from maximum, that is what you get.

The first shot is the fastest, subsequent shots are slower, and there are 22 shots available before the velocity falls 4% below the peak, at about 1500 psi.

This was almost universally known as the “Korean Cliff” tune, because these guns tended to be tuned to produce the maximum possible power on the first shot. Unfortunately, since “velocity sells”, this is becoming increasingly common, instead of less so.

We’ll simply call it the “cliff”.

I now bring your attention to the teal colored string, where the preload was 4 turns out. This string starts at 1800 psi, and ends at about 1300, and has 52 shots. Obviously the efficiency is greater than the previous one, over twice as many shots at about 10% less FPE, on a 500 psi drop instead of just 300.

Most times, this will be the result you will be looking for when tuning unregulated PCPs…. a symmetrical bell curve.

As you continue to back out the preload, the string gets longer, but you will notice on the chart it shifts to the right (to lower pressures). This is because if you fill to 1800 psi, the first shots will be more than 4% below the peak velocity.

The purple string, at 5 turns out, starts at about 1700 psi, and ends at about 1100 psi, but has 64 shots. If this tune suited your needs, no reason not to use it, and only fill to 1700 psi.

Therefore, in an unregulated PCP you can have many acceptable tunes. Each will have its own corresponding pressure range. Generally, reducing the hammer spring preload will give more shots, at greater efficiency, but may require a lower fill pressure.

What is Actually Happening?

You will remember from previous articles, I mentioned that for any given pressure, there is a plateau velocity set by the parameters of the gun.

No amount of hammer strike will increase the velocity further.

Conversely, on the other end of the curve, the valve is operating in “partial valve lock”, and not opening fully, because of insufficient hammer strike for the pressure. If you plot the velocity vs the hammer spring preload at various pressures, you get something like this theoretical chart:

Bob’s Guide To Tuning Unregulated PCPs

Increased preload is to the left.

Note that as you increase the pressure, the velocity is higher, and the point at which the plateau starts (the knee) requires more preload. In the middle of this chart, the curves cross over each other.

If we cut vertical “slices” through the chart, at various preloads, we get another chart that looks like this:

Bob’s Guide To Tuning Unregulated PCPs

The red line is your classic cliff.

There is too much preload for the operating pressure range, and as the pressure falls, so does the velocity.

As you reduce the hammer spring preload, a bell curve starts to appear (yellow), and as you reduce it further we get the “best” tune for this pressure range (black). If you reduce the preload further, the valve does not open properly at the highest pressure (teal), and if you want to stay within a narrow velocity range you must use a lower fill pressure (in this case about 2800 psi).

As you decrease the preload even more (purple), you would start at an even lower pressure (eg. 2600 psi) but you would also shoot down to a lower pressure as well (perhaps 1600 psi).

What is an Acceptable Velocity Spread?

No discussion of tuning unregulated PCPs would be complete without a discussion of what is an acceptable spread between the highest and lowest velocity in the shot string, known as the ES, or Extreme Spread.

I almost always use a 4% ES as my standard, meaning the slowest shot is not less than 96% of the fastest. I find this acceptable for shooting within 50 yards.

The shorter the range, the wider the ES you can tolerate before you notice vertical stringing on the target. For plinking at 20 yards, a 10% ES may be acceptable.

If you are shooting at 100 yards, you might desire a 2% ES or less. However, don’t obsess on this number. The very best .22LR target ammunition has an ES of over 2% over a box of 50 shells. Typical Long Rifle High Velocity ammo is more like a 4% ES.

It depends on your pellet choice (a pellet with a good BC will have less vertical stringing at the same velocity), but generally the above recommendations will have any stringing hidden within the nominal group size of the rifle and shooter.

That deals with tuning unregulated PCPs. Next month we will talk about one method to, at least in theory, reduce the ES. Pressure regulation.

Umarex USA has announced that they will be introducing a new Ruger 10/22 air rifle replica at the 2019 SHOT Show next week. No photographs yet. When we have more information and photographs, we’ll let you know…

The company also has announced another new air rifle, to be shown at the show. This is the Umarex Synergis. The Synergis is a repeating air rifle with an underlever action. Again, no photos yet.

The only other airgun currently being mentioned by Umarex in its pre-publicity material is the Hammer big bore air rifle. This has been seen – in various forms – at previous SHOT Shows and so does not exactly count as “new news”.

In fact, 2019 has a very different feel from previous SHOT Shows in respect of pre-publicity announcements for new airgun products.

In previous years, there have been many product pre-announcements ahead of the show, some with considerable detail. But for the 2019 SHOT Show, things are very quiet. Yes, we have this mention of the Ruger 10/22 air rifle replica and the Umarex Synergis. Yes, we have some new versions of the Gamo Swarm 10-shot breakbarrel platform announced – as you can see here in HAM. But basically, that’s it so far.

Will the Ruger 10/22 air rifle replica and the Umarex Synergis be the only new airgun products announced at the 2019 SHOT Show? I doubt it. But the airgun industry is playing its hands uncommonly close to its chest this year.

Maybe there will be a last-minute rush of pre-show announcements? Maybe not.

Fortunately HAM Publisher Stephen Archer will be reporting live from the 2019 SHOT Show to bring you all the latest airgun news.

The 2019 SHOT Show show runs from January 22-25. However, there are some pre-show airgun-related events before that and we’ll bring you details of those, too.

So keep watching HAM for 2019 SHOT Show news from 20 January onwards. That way you’ll be able to know the whole story as it happens…

Here’s a “stealth launch” of what will undoubtedly be a hot new product! The Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB pistol has not been announced by Umarex USA yet. However, it’s available in stock at Pyramyd Air…

So far, the only Glock model to have been formally announced launched is the Glock 19 Gen 3 non-blowback model. This is a great performer and extremely authentic, as we discovered in our recent HAM test review.

Undoubtedly the Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB pistol will first be publicly unveiled at the 2019 SHOT Show next week.

Here’s some details of the new Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB pistol, courtesy of Pyramyd Air:

The Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB pistol has a blowback metal slide action, combined with a drop free metal magazine. This is different from the existing Glock 19 Gen 3 model and will undoubtedly be a huge attraction to firearms replica air pistol shooters!

The Muzzle Velocity specification of the model 17 is 365 FPS. That would be the maximum, of course, under favorable conditions. The magazine holds 18 BBs and one 12 Gram CO2 cartridge.

Like the model 19, the new Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB pistol has full and realistic Glock trademarks and logos. Unlike the “19”, it also has fully-functioning controls, as on the firearm.

Overall size and weight of the Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB pistol are extremely similar to the firearm original. It fits into a duty holster and so will be ideal for practice and training for the many civilian and Law Enforcement owners of the semiautomatic firearm original.

Pyramyd Air is selling the Glock 17 Gen 3 Blowback BB pistol at $99.99 and that sounds like a great deal!

Gamo has announced the new Gamo Swarm Fusion 10X. It’s Generation Two of the multi-shot, magazine-fed Swarm breakbarrel air rifle platform.

The company claims that its 10X Technology takes another step forward with the new horizontal magazine alignment on the Gamo Swarm Fusion 10X. (We’ll bring you better photos from the SHOT show, the one above is all we have available so far).

Gamo’s 10X Technology first appeared in the industry-changing Swarm Maxxim. This was the first breakbarrel air rifle featuring a 10-shot magazine to allow shooters to fire 10 shots as rapidly as they can break the barrel.

Gamo says that this is still the most user-friendly multi-shot breakbarrel system. They also claim that the Gamo Swarm Fusion 10X stands apart from all other breakbarrels with its horizontal magazine system.

The new Gamo Swarm Fusion 10X is available in both .177 and .22 calibers.

There’s a thumbhole stock which features a prominent pistol grip which Gamo says guarantees a solid hand-hold for sure accuracy.

Gamo tells us that it’s easy to load 10 pellets into this new horizontal magazine system. Even though the Gamo Swarm Fusion 10X comes with a scope, the barrel is fitted with an open, adjustable iron back sight and a fiber optic front blade. That’s an obvious benefit of the new magazine configuration.

Retail price is $269.99.

The new FX DreamLite air rifle has arrived at the HAM offices. We were excited to see a production model of this latest airgun from the Swedish company – and we’re sure you will be, too!

The first thing you notice about the FX Dreamlite is that it’s LIGHT! Just about 6 Lbs without magazine, scope or accessories.

The next thing you notice is that the rotary magazine sits really high above the top of the breech. This leads to a hunt for high scope rings. Obviously the requirement is to achieve clearance between the bottom of the scope and the top of the magazine.

Like so…

Having installed the scope, we can then admire the new air rifle.

First Look At The FX DreamLite Air Rifle

The FX Dreamline looks long, simple and skinny in the Dreamlite configuration. Exactly what the manufacturer intended!

Indeed, if you compare the FX Dreamlite to the Impact, the older gun looks really quite tubby.

Highlights of the new FX Dreamlite include the adjustable hammer spring adjuster…

Of course, there’s also the highly-adjustable FX match-grade trigger!

The regulator pressure is indicated by the pressure gauge on the side of the receiver (we saw it above). Fill pressure is shown by the gauge in the front of the air tube of the FX Dreamlite. There’s a screw thread at the front of the shroud, with a small cover ring. When unscrewed, this allows a moderator to be fitted.

FX is offering a special moderator manufactured by DONNYFL as a dealer option on the Dream-Lite, Dream-Pup and Dream-Classic models.

Of course, customization is a key benefit of the entire FX Dreamline range. So, first, we added a UTG rubber armored bipod to the picatinny rail ahead of the trigger guard.

Then, with the assistance of a 5 mm Allen (hex) wrench, we popped off the Houge pistol grip from the FX Dreamlite. It was replaced it with a flat dark earth UTG Pro AR15 grip. Just for a personal touch and because we could!

That knob on top of the gun above the hammer spring adjuster looks very much like the locking device for the slender buttstock. There’s another thing to explore in future. But first we need to start shooting the Dreamlite for its comprehensive HAM test report.

Replica Ruger 10/22 Air Rifle Introduced By Umarex

Umarex has announced that the company will introduce a new replica Ruger 10/22 air rifle at the 2019 SHOT Show in Las Vegas next week. Here’s some more information…

This is – of course – an officially-licensed replica of the ubiquitous 22 caliber air rifle that’s been consistently popular for many years. It’s CO2-powered, using 2 x 12 Gram CO2 cartridges and is available in .177 caliber.

Umarex says that the replica Ruger 10/22 air rifle has an authentically-shaped magazine. In addition, magazine release pushes forward in authentic fashion giving you the ability to pull the magazine from the receiver.

Internally, the magazine holds a red, removable rotary clip that accepts 10 pellets and is cleverly held in the magazine by a sliding lever. This allows for the easy exchange of a pre-loaded clips available which will be available as an accessory item.

Umarex USA tells us that he bolt of the replica Ruger 10/22 air rifle does not load a pellet into the chamber. However, it serves to cock the rifle when actuated, giving the 10/22 Air Rifle a three-pound trigger pull.

The weight of the trigger and its identical overall size makes it an ideal rifle for first-time shooters whose natural next step up is the Ruger 10/22 chambered for .22 LR, says Umarex USA.

The CO2 cartridges are located in the buttstock. The buttpad slides out to reveal an incorporated Allen wrench.

That wrench is used to remove a long cylinder inside the stock. The two, 12-gram CO2 cartridges are installed back-to-back within the stock of the rifle and are punctured for first use. It’s a similar system to that used on the Legends MP40 replica.

Umarex says that the replica Ruger 10/22 air rifle is slightly lighter than the firearm, but looks the part. The sights are authentic in style, including the folding rear sight, and the rifle has authentic looking sling attachments incorporated.

The receiver is ready to accept after-market rails that fit the Ruger 10/22. This enables a scope to be mounted, if required by the owner. So far, HAM does not have information on the Muzzle Velocity for this interesting new air rifle. We’ll find that out at the SHOT Show!

The Benjamin Mag-Fire multi-shot break barrel air rifle is a newly-announced model from Velocity Outdoor. It’s sure to be at the 2019 SHOT Show next week.

This series, offered in three models, combines a new auto-loading feature with the Nitro Piston Elite power plant. The manufacturer says that this creates a multi-shot break barrel series that achieves muzzle velocities of up 1400 FPS, together with optimal accuracy standards.

The Benjamin Mag-Fire multi-shot auto-loading feature allows for rapid and automatic reloading through a 10 round magazine with each break of the barrel.

“We are very excited to offer the airgun consumer a very affordable option in an auto-loading break barrel series with the performance expectations the Benjamin consumer has learned to trust”, says VP of Product Development, Dave Jenner.

“The entire Mag-Fire series supports the same power plant and auto-loading technology, but each model is separated in price based on the inclusion of features such as a stock design, wood, optics packages, and sling mounts”, Jenner continued.

Benjamin Mag-Fire Key Features include:

·       10 shot auto-loading magazine
·       Empty magazine indicator
·       SBD Gold sound suppression
·       Rifled barrel
·       Adjustable, two-stage Clean Break Trigger
·       Bundled CenterPoint 4x32mm scope
·       Picatinny Rail
·       5 year warranty

MSRP:

·       Mag-Fire Ultra – $149
·       Mag-Fire Nomad (wood) – $179
·       Mag-Fire Mission (synthetic) – $179

HAM readers with a long memory will remember that a Benjamin MAG-Fire auto-loading break barrel air rifle was first announced a year ago at the 2018 SHOT Show.

However, this year’s announcement has some improvements, such as the Nitro Piston Elite gas ram powerplant. The name is also rendered in a slightly different manner (Mag-Fire, rather than MAG-Fire).

The New Umarex Synergis 12-Shot Repeating Gas Piston Pellet Rifle

$

Umarex USA will unveil the revolutionary new Umarex Synergis, the first 12-shot repeating gas piston pellet rifle, during SHOT Show 2019 In Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Umarex Synergis is the first gas piston under lever rifle to offer an in-line repeating action,  fixed barrel, and removable magazine, says the company. The patent-pending Airflow Boost Technology (ABT) with auto-loading probe mechanism automatically seats a pellet from the magazine into the chamber upon cocking, Umarex tells us. Muzzle Velocity is said to reach 1000 FPS with lead pellets.

Its 12-round RapidMag  underlever system combined with its patent-pending Airflow Boost Technology makes the Umarex Synergis the easiest, most convenient and technologically advanced .177 caliber pellet rifle available, says Umarex.

One thing is for certain, the Synergis certainly looks to have combined the multi-shot magazine concept into the lines of the gun in a smoother manner than its competitors which have been announced to date.

The Umarex Synergis is claimed to be a true repeater, providing 12 shots from a removable auto-indexing magazine. Umarex USA tells us that – having an under lever action – the fixed barrel and breech block are never out of line with the air cylinder as it would be if it were a break barrel. That means inherent accuracy, they say.

The innovative under lever cocking mechanism automatically advances the magazine and loads and seats a pellet into the breech chamber.

Umarex USA says that the Muzzle Velocity of 1,000 FPS is achieved due to new Airflow Boost Technology. In addition, the company incorporated a full shroud to quieten the rifle, similar to that of the Umarex Gauntlet.

“There’s not another gas piston repeating pellet rifle that’s as fast to shoot as the Umarex Synergis. It’s going to reinvigorate the pellet rifle market.” Said Richard Turner, President of Umarex USA, Inc. “The Synergis has functionality like never before seen in a pellet rifle, especially for one that retails for $169.”

All SIG Branded Airgun Products To Be “In-House” Going Forward

$

Until now, SIG SAUER airgun products have been available in two ways. Some SIG branded airgun products – specifically some air pistols – have been produced under license by other companies. (This is, of course, common practice in the airgun industry, particularly for replica CO2-powered air pistols).

Increasingly, however, SIG airguns have been produced “in house” by the company themselves. For example, the new ASP20, MCX, MPX air rifles and many air pistols such as the M17, We The People, Max Michel 1911 etc are “in-house” SIG SAUER Products. You can see the full list here.

Now SIG SAUER Inc. has announced that – effective immediately – SIG SAUER will no longer be working with licensees in the development, distribution or sales of SIG branded airgun products in the commercial market. This also applies to airsoft products.

As a result, the SIG AIR Division will take global control over the engineering, development, manufacturing, distribution and sales of all SIG-branded airgun products.

“As part of our strategic growth plans, SIG SAUER is no longer licensing its brand or marks for use in the commercial marketplace for airsoft and airgun products,” said Joseph Huston, Vice President and General Manager of the SIG AIR Division.

“We are rapidly expanding the SIG AIR business, and it is important to us to assume full control to ensure all SIG AIR products are of the highest quality. We have many exciting, industry-leading products in the pipeline and look forward to introducing those in the days ahead.”

AirForce Announces The TexanLSS

$

AirForce Airguns is announcing a new member of the Texan family of big bore air rifles for 2019, the TexanLSS.

The TexanLSS combines the power of the original Texan with the sound suppression technology featured on the integrally suppressed Texan SS.

AirForce says that the LSS sound reduction system will be available as a complete rifle as well as an upgrade kit for existing Texan non-suppressed Texan rifles.

AirForce Announces The TexanLSS

Since its release in 2015 the Texan has continued to be the most powerful production air rifle on the market, says AirForce. With the 2018 season substantially increasing the number of states allowing air rifles as a legal method of take for big game, the Texan has seen more success in the hands of hunters than ever before, the company tells HAM.

“With the sport of airgun hunting growing at an exponential rate, the amount of feedback Airforce Airguns has received from hunters in the field has been nothing short of astounding” said AirForce Airguns Director of Marketing, Cameron Brinkerhoff.

“We have been listening to our customers and found that hunters loved the sound suppression benefits of our existing SS models. But they wanted to achieve the same power levels as our non-suppressed, long barrel models. The TexanLLS and accompanying Big Bore Sound-Loc upgrade for existing Texan rifles fulfill that need without the end user having to make permanent modification to the rifle.”

The TexanLSS and Big Bore Sound Loc Kits will be available to dealers by late 1st quarter, in plenty of time for the 2019 hunting season.
AirForce says that installation of Big Bore Sound Loc kits requires minimal tools and can be accomplished by the end user. Alternatively, Texan rifle owners can send their rifle to AirForce to have it installed, for a small labor charge in addition to the cost of the Sound Loc Kit.

The TexanLSS and Big Bore Sound Loc kit will be available initially for .457 models with .357 and .30 caliber kits to follow shortly.

AirForce Airguns has announced a new version of the RAW HM1000x LRT air rifle. These updated LRT rifles are in production now and will be shipping to dealers shortly after the 2019 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since acquiring RAW Airguns in 2018, AirForce Airguns has been hard at work with the team at RAW to streamline production and update RAW product lines to better serve market demand and customer needs. One result is this updated version of the popular HM1000x LRT (Long Range Target) air rifle for 2019.

Claimed to be capable of sub 1-inch groups out to 100 yards, the RAW HM1000x LRT by is the ultimate in long range precision, says the company. The LRT combines reliability, accuracy, and American craftsmanship to provide a confidence in hand that is unmatched by any other air rifle, AirForce Airguns tells us.

At the heart of the LRT is the proven HM1000x receiver featuring our high-power tune allowing the RAW HM1000x LRT air rifle to create up to 50 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy in .22 caliber. In .25 caliber that figure is 60 Ft/Lbs in .25, 80 Ft/Lbs in .30 and up to 220 Ft/Lbs in .357 caliber.

The fully regulated design ensures that shot strings are consistent and the 480-cc carbon fiber bottle provides enough air on board for extended stays at the range or in the field, says AirForce.

Every RAW HM1000x LRT air rifle features a Lothar Walther barrel, with the .22 and .25 models featuring polygon rifling.  After the barrel is fitted to the receiver, each barreled action is tested to ensure accuracy before it leaves the factory.

AirForce tells HAM that the LRT stock provides excellent ergonomics and true ambidexterity. The pistol grip features generous palm swells, a steep grip angle, and a checkered finish for a positive, no slip grip.

The forend sports a flat underside providing a solid contact surface for shooters wanting to use there HM1000x LRT from a bench rest.

Five M-Lok slots are integrated into the forend so that off the shelf accessories such as bipods, sling studs, and Q.D. attachments can be easily added without the use of specialty adaptors.

The LRT stock’s cheek piece is height adjustable as well as the butt pad. The two can be adjusted in combination to give shooters the perfect position on the rifle to match their physique.

The RAW HM1000x LRT air rifle fires from a rotary magazine that holds 12 shots in .22 and .25 calibers, 9 shots in .30 cal, and 7 shots in .357. Single Shot trays are also available for those wanting to hand load their rifles.

There’s a side lever cocking mechanism and the trigger is a fully adjustable version of the TM1000 target trigger. The RAW HM1000x LRT trigger adds a safety catch and features polished and hardened steel parts for durability and smoothness.

The XD(M) series of polymer pistols were introduced in 2007 by Springfield Armory. The line featured a ground-breaking design that offered new and higher standards for ergonomic comfort, ease of operation, features and performance.

Over one decade later, Air Venturi includes this legendary series to the Springfield Armory airgun replica range, in both compact (3.8-inch) and standard (4.5-inch) configurations.

The .177 BB-firing, CO2-powered series features a 20 round magagazine and full blowback. Air Venturi tells us that it and can shoot at velocities of up to 325 FPS.

The Springfield Armory airgun replica versions offer interchangeable backstraps, like its firearm counterpart, for ergonomic comfort.  The 3.8-inch compact versions offer coordinating grip frame extensions to allow the use of the longer 4.5-inch version magazines.

These XD(M) Springfield Armory airgun replica models will be available in all black and black frame/silver slide finishes starting in spring 2019.

“We are beyond excited to be launching both the M1 Carbine rifle series and XD(M) pistol series as our first replicas from the iconic Springfield Armory line of firearms,” said Val Gamerman, President of Air Venturi.

“The M1 Carbine embodies the history of the revered firearm that was used not only the U.S. military, but by military, paramilitary and police forces around the world.  The XD(M) series of pistols will be available in spring 2019, and will be a hit with airgunners and replica enthusiasts alike.”

“With the 2019 release of the M1 Carbine and XD(M) officially licensed replicas, this marks Springfield Armory’s first chapter in the airgun industry,” said Steve McKelvain, Springfield Armory President.

“This is the first of many replica rifles and pistols that will solidify both Air Venturi and Springfield Armory’s place in the progression of quality airguns.”

Expect to find these new replica airguns available from Pyramyd Air, Airgun Depot and other Air Venturi dealers.

Hot News! The New SIG MCX Virtus PCP Air Rifle

Hot news is the first sighting of the new SIG MCX Virtus PCP air rifle!

I attended today’s Premier Media Event, held by SIG SAUER at the outstanding Clark County Shooting Complex outside Las Vegas. This was the first pre-show event of the 2019 SHOT Show and SIG Air had several new products to show.

Hot News! The New SIG MCX Virtus PCP Air Rifle

The SIG MCX Virtus PCP air rifle is a development of the existing SIG Air ASP MCX CO2-powered air rifle – but considerably improved! The obvious change is that this model uses regulated High Pressure Air, giving somewhere around double the Muzzle Energy of the CO2-powered original version.

Hot News! The New SIG MCX Virtus PCP Air Rifle

The SIG MCX Virtus PCP air rifle fills to 3,000 PSI. That pressure is then throttled-down to 1,100 PSI by the regulator for use in the action. As you would expect, the 13 Cubic Inch HPA tank provides somewhere north of 150 consistent shots, before the regulator cuts-in.

Below, SIG Air’s Development Manager Ed Schultz was also shooting the Virtus PCP…

Hot News! The New SIG MCX Virtus PCP Air Rifle

And so was SIG Air’s Stephanie Kee…

Hot News! The New SIG MCX Virtus PCP Air Rifle

SIG Air’s General manager Joe Huston told me that the new SIG MCX Virtus PCP air rifle will be available sometime in the second quarter of 2019. That’s before July. The gun will be available only in .22 caliber – at least at first – and the power level is set to a Muzzle Energy of 11 Ft/Lbs. That equates to a maximum Muzzle Velocity of 700 FPS.

That’s part of the reason for the great shot count. It also means that the SIG MCX Virtus PCP air rifle will comply with UK legal power restrictions from first introduction. So British shooters will be able to buy the SIG MCX Virtus PCP air rifle this Summer, too!

Hot News! The New SIG MCX Virtus PCP Air Rifle

Of course, the SIG MCX Virtus PCP air rifle uses the high-capacity rotary belt magazine system of the existing ASP MCX. It also has the same rapid fire capability as the CO2-powered version.

MSRP for the US market is to be $349.99. So we can expect to see a Street Price rather less than that…

New CO2-Powered SIG P365 ASP Air Pistol Launched

The SIG P365 has been a huge success as a concealed carry pistol. So it’s no surprise that SIG Air has launched a CO2-powered SIG P365 ASP air pistol version.

This extremely-realistic version of the P365 was first shown at SIG’s Special Media Day prior to the 2019 SHOT Show. The P365 ASP air pistol is a BB-firing model that’s scheduled to be in stores around mid-year 2019.

The SIG P365 ASP air pistol was clearly a considerable engineering challenge to achieve. That’s because of the very small size. That made it extremely difficult to include a regular 12 Gram CO2 cartridge and valve into the drop-free magazine, as you can see below…

New CO2-Powered SIG P365 ASP Air Pistol Launched

Those hands behind the new SIG P365 ASP air pistol belong to SIG Air’s General Manager Joe Huston. He was also excited to tell me about SIG Air’s move into the high quality airsoft business – a market with HUGE potential for the company.

That’s Joe below with the SIG Air ProForce MCX airsoft model. It’s a high-end AEG gun with metal gearbox. I know that HAM is not about airsoft, but this gun was definitely a real hoot to shoot on full automatic. I tried!

New CO2-Powered SIG P365 ASP Air Pistol Launched

But wait! There was even more news from SIG Air!

The new ASP SuperTarget over-cocking target pistol was also here in shootable form. (I’ve seen it before in a non-shooting, pre-production version). This air pistol has very similar grips and handling to the SIG P226 firearm and – again – has strong training potential for firearms owners.

New CO2-Powered SIG P365 ASP Air Pistol Launched

SIG’s Stephanie Kee was very pleased with the new air pistol at the range…

I shot this air pistol, of course, and found the overlever action to be easy to operate, even if actually loading the pellet into the breech was somewhat of an acquired skill.

That’s a lot of news from SIG. This evening I’m attending a Velocity Outdoor (formerly Crosman Corporation) media event. HAM will bring you all the latest new airgun product news from that tomorrow!

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

Velocity Outdoor (the former Crosman Corporation) launched the new Bushmaster MPW full auto BB Gun and more at a pre-SHOT Show event.

The launch even was held at Machine Guns Vegas and gave attendees the opportunity to both handle and shoot the new airguns.

At first, I thought the new Bushmaster MPW full auto BB gun was the huge-selling Crosman DPMS SBR in Flat Dark Earth coloring. But I was wrong! The Bushmaster MPW full auto BB Gun is actually smaller than the DPMS, as Airgun Product Manager Phillip Guadalupe demonstrates, below.

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

Of course, shooting the Bushmaster MPW full auto BB gun on full auto was great fun with the selector set to “rock and roll”! We all had a ton of fun with it…

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

The Bushmaster MPW full auto BB gun is planned to be available in stores from about April 2019 with a MSRP of $199.

Among other new products was a new “Generation Two” version of the Benjamin Fortitude. This will be available in March 2019, at the same price as the original version.

The main changes for this Gen. Two Fortitude are the provision of a lighter hammer spring. Hammer spring tension can be adjusted in the same manner as the Marauder, through the rear of the air tube. This is the only differentiating major external difference between the two versions.

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

This new hammer spring adjuster makes it possible for the owner to tune performance of the Gen Two Fortitude for higher FPS and less consistent shots  or lower FPS and more consistent shots.

The lighter hammer spring also allows for a significantly lighter trigger pull weight – Phillip Guadalupe told me – thus addressing one of the few complaints about the Generation One Fortitude.

This SHOT Show preview was also the first public sighting of the new Benjamin ReCharge HPA Compressor. This is a mid-range compressor deigned to fill large HPA tanks. It’s a clear stage above the Benjamin Traveler portable HPA compressor which is designed to fill guns directly.

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

In size and appearance, the Benjamin ReCharge bears a distinct resemblance to an old desktop PC computer. The MSRP is to be $1399 and availability is scheduled for May 2019.

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

The new Benjamin Mag-Fire was also at the event. This is scheduled to be in stores in June 2019. Although the magazine looks similar to that from the Marauder. It’s actually slightly different.

Next, there’s a blast from the past!

You may remember the old Crosman NightStalker – a CO2-powered fast-firing carbine from 2005. Well, now the name is back and it’s in use for a new CO2-powered pistol. It’s also rendered slightly differently as Nigh Stalker, instead as one word.

The new Crosman Night Stalker is a blowback pistol with a metal slide and a built-in laser. Again, it’s planned to be available in May 2019.

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

Finally, Phillip Guadalupe showed me the new Remington 1100. This is a “shotgun-styled” BB and pellet-firing gun that is based on Crosman 760 internals. The MSRP is to be around $55 and availability is set for April 2019.

New Bushmaster MPW Full Auto BB Gun And More At Pre-SHOT Show Event

That concludes the news from the two main 2019 pre-SHOT Show events! We’ll be back on Tuesday reporting directly from the Show. Watch this space…

.50 caliber Umarex Hammer To Start Shipping in March 2019

Umarex USA has announced that the .50 caliber Umarex Hammer will start shipping in March 2019.

The Hammer was conceived, designed and engineered in America and is being built in the U.S.A. Its production assembly is taking place in Fort Smith, Arkansas within the facility of Umarex USA and is set to begin in March 2019.

“It’s been exciting to see the concept come to fruition. Now we’re seeing the final parts inspected, measured and verified. The production cell and process has come together and seeing all of this has made it well worth the wait,” said Richard Turner, President of Umarex USA, Inc.

The Muzzle Energy, speed and three full-power shots delivered by the .50 caliber Umarex Hammer is achieved by its proprietary, patent-pending, Lightspeed valve.

The Hammer’s Lightspeed valve, coupled with a regulator instantly pulses a measure of air, compressed to 3,000 PSI, behind the projectile.

.50 caliber Umarex Hammer To Start Shipping in March 2019

Umarex USA explains that innovative engineering was used to design this valve mechanism. Coupled with a .50 caliber, 180-grain non-lead bullet, Muzzle Velocity is claimed to exceed 1,130 FPS. Just as monumental, a 550-grain lead slug is responsible for the generation of its claimed 705 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy.

Almost as impressive, it only takes two pounds of effort to operate its straight-pull bolt. This short, effortless, bolt action is all that’s required to cock the rifle and advance the magazine, Umarex USA tells us.

.50 caliber Umarex Hammer To Start Shipping in March 2019

Umarex USA’s team of engineers have produced multiple prototypes of various mechanisms for the Hammer during the nearly three-year development process.

The .50 caliber Umarex Hammer is powered by 4,500 pounds per square inch of High Pressure Air in its custom, on-board carbon fiber tank to a capacity of 24 cubic inches.

The .50 caliber Umarex Hammer has a multitude of useful and user-friendly features that both hunters and shooters appreciate, Umarex USA tells us.

In addition to being the world’s most powerful airgun delivering three regulated, full-power shots, it is the only production .50 caliber air rifle that offers multiple shots from its patent-pending double-chamber magazine.

.50 caliber Umarex Hammer To Start Shipping in March 2019

Unique to the .50 caliber Umarex Hammer is the utilization of three safeties. There’s a conventional trigger block, a magazine lockout that prevents it from discharging without a magazine inserted AND a field safety.

Umarex USA collaborated with PolyOne Corporation, a premier provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions, in the design, engineering and material selection for the stock and barrel shroud of the .50 caliber Umarex Hammer air rifle.

As a result, the stock, forearm and other key polymer components are produced from Nymax, an advanced polymer that withstands the rugged trials of outdoor hunting and shooting. Together, the advanced polymer materials and innovative design, including smooth edges and tight-fitting joints, form a modern and functional stock for the Hammer rifle that is both shooter-friendly and made to last, says Umarex USA.

.50 caliber Umarex Hammer To Start Shipping in March 2019

Richard Turner, President of Umarex USA, Inc, said, “In working with PolyOne, we targeted certain design and performance aspects of the polymer portions of the Hammer. The PolyOne team embraced our concept and the performance targets and worked hand-in-hand with our product development team to develop specific options that met our design, weight and most importantly, performance goals.”

The .50 caliber Umarex Hammer is equipped with additional features that include a standard Magpul AR grip. There’s a quick disconnect Foster fitting to fill the onboard air cylinder and an externally-visible air pressure gauge.

The button-rifled .50 caliber barrel is made in Germany, and there’s a 8.5-inch long Picatinny rail. Its full-length composite shroud helps to dampen its report and each Hammer comes with two double-chamber magazines. The MSRP $799.99.

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

Pyramyd Air had a ton of great new stuff at their booth at the 2019 SHOT Show. One of the clear highlights was the Springfield Armory M1 carbine BB rifle, as Tyler Patner shows us above.

Pyramyd Air has an official licensing agreement to offer airgun versions of Springfield Armory firearms. The M1 carbine BB rifle is a product that will certainly create considerable interest among replica airgun shooters.

Tyler showed me this new airgun in considerable detail, as you can see from these photographs below. Overall, the M1 carbine BB rifle looks extremely realistic, with external controls functioning very much as the firearm original.

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

Although the stock of the M1 carbine BB rifle is synthetic, it actually looks very realistic. Tyler told me that a regular M1 wood stock will fit, however, and that Air Venturi may even sell wood stock kits for enthusiasts to make that upgrade.

There’s bound to be many questions about compatibility of the M1 carbine BB rifle with the firearm original. Will a bayonet fit, for example. Tyler said that they are looking into such questions, but – of course – there were so many accessories for the M1 carbine that this could be a lifetime project!

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

The magazine releases from the M1 carbine BB rifle in the expected manner. It contains a 12 Gram CO2 cartridge and up to 15 BBs.

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

The Springfield Armory XD(M) CO2 BB pistol also looks very realistic, with full blowback.

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

Moving on from the Springfield Armory airgun replicas, Tyler also showed me a variety of other new airguns that are becoming available in the next few months. These include the unique Ataman BP17 compact PCP air rifle that we first saw at the 2017 IWA Show.

The HAM Team can’t wait to test this innovative air rifle!!!

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

And then there Kral Puncher Ekinoks semi-automatic PCP air rifle. Again, we’ve seen this model at the 2018 IWA Show in Germany, but this is its first official appearance in the USA.

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

There’s been a gap in the youth target air rifle market since the IZH61 ceased to be available some years ago. However, this demand will be fulfilled in 2019 by the Air Venturi TR5 Youth Target air rifle.

The TR5 is to be available in black and lime yellow and looks a little chunkier than the “Izzie”.

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

And then there’s a very interesting new product. It’s the Air Venturi BadaBang airgun target system. What, an interesting airgun trap/target? Actually, yes!

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

The Air Venturi BadaBang can function as a simple knockdown airgun target. But it actually includes an electronic box inside the trap/target.

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

That enables the BadaBang target system to be linked to a smartphone – there will be apps for iOS and Android. Now we have a connected airgun target that could be used to track your scores. It could even be used to make possible simultaneous shooting competitions between people thousands of miles apart. Just think about that!

Springfield Armory M1 Carbine BB Rifle And Other Great Stuff At Pyramyd Air

Here I should say that the cellphone is NOT intended to be put inside the BadaBang target system! We placed it there for the photograph because it was the most convenient way to show the complete system together.

Don’t try this at home, folks…

There’s much more news to come from the 2019 SHOT Show, so keep watching HAM for all the updates!

2019 SHOT Show Day Two – New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

For our HAM Report from Day Two of the 2019 SHOT Show, we’ll take-in new products from Daystate, Brocock and Diana. There’s a lot of them and there’s more…

In our heading photograph above, we see the new Brocock Patagonia. This is a full production version of the Brocock Bantam Sniper HR air rifle that was used to win the 2018 Extreme Benchrest by Claudio Flores. And that’s Claudio in our photograph with “his” air rifle.

Brocock had chosen the 2019 SHOT Show as the platform to launch this interesting new model.

Why Patagonia? Well, Claudio’s company is called Patagonia Airguns. And this new airgun carries Claudio’s signature on the shroud, as we can see below.

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

The Brocock Patagonia is available in both .22 and .25 calibers. There’s adjustable power levels up to 46 Ft/Lbs in .22 and 55 Ft/Lbs in .25 cal. With a Huma regulator, 460 cc carbon fiber HPA bottle and new 0dB silencer, this is the premier model in the semi-bullpup Brocock Bantam line.

Meanwhile, Lauren Parsons shows us both Brocock Commander and Patagonia models…

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

… and Tony Belas previews the Bantam Sniper Mini version of Brocock’s versatile Bantam range.

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

Another new model seen on the Daystate/Brocock booth at the 2019 SHOT Show was this new version of the Daystate Pulsar. This electronically-controlled bullpup PCP has been equipped with the laminated hardwood colorway first seen on the Daystate Saxon limited edition model form a couple of years ago.

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

Greg Glover shows us this to us. Again, the new Daystate 0dB silencer is fitted to further mute this shrouded air rifle’s report.

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

Another interesting new product to be seen at the Daystate/Brocock booth at the 2019 SHOT Show was this new Omega Trailcharger HPA compressor.

This compressor is can be powered by mains electricity (using the supplied transformer) or from a vehicle 12 Volt DC battery. Unlike most similar portable HPA compressors, however, it’s designed to be able to fill HPA tanks and not just PCP airguns directly. The Street Price will be $799, which is attractive for an HPA compressor of this capability.

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

As we can see from the photograph above, the TrailCharger is considerably smaller and lighter than the well-known Omega TurboCharger which sits next to it on the right.

The water cooled Omega TrailCharger also takes an innovative approach to managing the connecting cables, as is visible in this rear view.

2019 SHOT Show Day Two - New From Daystate, Brocock And Diana

Diana also had a variety of new products on display for the 2019 SHOT Show.

Here Markus Dombrowski of Diana shows us the new Diana Model 98 PCP air rifle. Diana already had an underlever spring/piston Kar. 98-looking air rife, of course. This continues to be available, but now there’s also this new lookalike for PCP enthusiasts.

For our HAM Report from Day Two of the 2019 SHOT Show, we'll take-in new products from Daystate, Brocock and Diana. There's a lot of them and there's more...

This Model 98 can be shot using a rotary magazine (of course) or a single shot tray as we see here. There’s also a chunky bolt handle that resembles that used on the original Mauser Karabiner 98k.

For our HAM Report from Day Two of the 2019 SHOT Show, we'll take-in new products from Daystate, Brocock and Diana. There's a lot of them and there's more...

Markus also showed me the Diana Skyhawk PCP, which is now shipping to US dealers and will be available for retail purchase very soon.

For our HAM Report from Day Two of the 2019 SHOT Show, we'll take-in new products from Daystate, Brocock and Diana. There's a lot of them and there's more...

Finally for today’s 2019 SHOT Show report, there’s a new CO2-powered version of the Diana Stormrider. It’s called the Diana Trailscout.

For our HAM Report from Day Two of the 2019 SHOT Show, we'll take-in new products from Daystate, Brocock and Diana. There's a lot of them and there's more...

The unusual feature of the Trailscout is that it is – to the best of my knowledge – the first air rifle that is powered by THREE 12 Gram CO2 cartridges.

For our HAM Report from Day Two of the 2019 SHOT Show, we'll take-in new products from Daystate, Brocock and Diana. There's a lot of them and there's more...

The Trailscout’s three-cartridge power system is made possible by a Patent-pending system developed by Diana. The first two CO2 cartridges are inserted into the gas tube as normal (flat ends towards either end), then the Aluminum spacer is inserted and the lever-fitted end cap engaged.

Piercing pins in the insert and tube cap pressurize the gun by piercing the flat ends of the CO2 cartridges. Simple and effective!

HAM will bring you more hot airgun news from the 2019 SHOT Show tomorrow. Stay tuned!

For our Day Three report from the SHOT Show 2019, we’ll focus on the large number of new products to be found at Umarex USA.  JB, the company’s Marketing Director, showed and explained everything, as we’ll see below…

Above, we see a new version of the Gauntlet, in camo-dipped finish. The Umarex Hammer will be shipping in March – as reported previously. Here’s the final version…

SHOT Show 2019 Day Three - New Umarex Products

…and here’s a reminder of just how big those 50 caliber slugs really are!

SHOT Show 2019 Day Three - New Umarex Products

Umarex pistol news in this SHOT Show 2019 report includes the much-anticipated Glock blowback models. There’s a new Glock 17 Gen 3, together with a Gen 4 version. The difference in the airguns is that the Gen 3 has a blowback slide, while the Gen 4 has “enhanced blowback” with a much greater travel.

Here we see the Gen 4 in front of the Gen 3. Note the difference in slide travel. Bot are fully locked back.

Another new Umarex CO2-powered replica air pistol is the Beretta M9A3. This is a full auto model in Flat Dark Earth with a 18-BB capacity drop free magazine.

Again, the M9A3 features a realistic, full travel blowback.

Overall, this is an accurate-looking reproduction of the classic Ruger semi-auto firearm, although somewhat lighter than the original. The CO2 cartridges fit up inside the buttstock, rather than in the magazine.

SHOT Show 2019 Day Three - New Umarex Products

Another new introduction by Umarex at the SHOT Show 2019 was the Synergis. This is a magazine-fed, underlever air rifle with a 12-shot magazine. It’s powered by a gas ram.

SHOT Show 2019 Day Three - New Umarex Products

Here we see a close-up of the Synergis magazine.

SHOT Show 2019 Day Three - New Umarex Products

Finally – phew! – Umarex used the SHOT Show 2019 to announce that they will be assembling a range of RWS breakbarrel air rifles at their facility in Arkansas. These are the RWS Model 3400 and 3500.

JB told me that these combine Italian Minelli stocks with German parts and US assembly. They are available in both .177 and .22 calibers, with the 3500 being more powerful. There are also spring/piston and gas ram versions. The 3400 and 3500 both have limited lifetime warranties.

There’s plenty more news still to come from the SHOT Show 2019!
