The Weihrauch HW80 was first manufactured in 1981. So why would HAM be writing about an air rifle that’s 37 years old?
Well, the reason is that the HW80 is a timeless classic. A real “blast from the past”, it’s still being built – and is selling – today. And it still has a great reputation as an outstanding spring/piston air rifle: it’s one of the all time greats.
Within the next month or so, Hard Air Magazine will be making a full review of the Weihrauch HW80. Today, we’re opening the box.
As soon as you look at the HW80’s card carton, you receive an impression of traditional quality. This is solid, high quality, no expense spared German corrugated card. That’s at least as important as it ever was because most of these guns will be purchased on the Internet and shipped using the “tender mercies” of one of the major parcels companies.
Opening the box, you immediately see that the HW80 is wrapped in a heavy plastic bag, nestled in very substantial foam moldings.
Quality packaging means that the HW80 is much more likely to reach you in perfect condition!
The “old world” approach continues with the sights. Weihrauch is clearly still committed to open sights. The tunnel front sight is supplied with no less than six different inserts. The rear sight is a classic, click-adjustable leaf model. There’s not a piece of fiber optic rod in sight!
Of course, the rear of the compression tube has scope rails and stop holes finely machined into it. We’ll be mounting a scope onto the HW80 for its full test review.
As befits such a classic design there’s just about no performance or feature claims from the manufacturer.
Yes, the Muzzle Velocity is the obligatory 1,000 FPS. And, of course, the renowned Weihrauch Rekord trigger still has many fans. But that’s about it.
Immediate impressions are of a heavy air rifle with beautiful wood and metal finish.
The question is “will the performance match it’s reputation?”
