HAM reader Frederick Voisen contacted us with news of new airgun hunting changes for Florida in the 2018-19 season. This follows rapidly on from the new Texas proposals for airgun hunting.
Fred has information on these changes by email from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). They are due to become effective from July 1, 2018. It looks as if airbows are also included in some of these changes, too.
Here’s the information Fred received…
“Air gun-related changes for the 2018-19 season include:
• Definition – A “pre-charged pneumatic air gun” is a commercially-manufactured air gun that is charged from an external high compression source such as an air compressor, air tank, or external hand pump and is specifically designed to propel a bolt, arrow, or other projectile commonly used for hunting.
• On privately owned lands – Pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air guns propelling a single projectile (to include a single bullet of no less than .30 caliber or an arrow or bolt) may be used to take deer during the general gun season (but are prohibited during archery, crossbow and muzzleloading gun seasons). PCP air guns propelling a single projectile (to include a single bullet of no less than .20 caliber or an arrow or bolt) may be used to take wild turkey during the fall and spring turkey seasons.
• On many public lands managed by FWC (e.g., WMAs/WEAs) – Pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air guns propelling a single projectile (to include a single bullet of no less than .30 caliber or an arrow or bolt) may be used to take deer during established seasons (including most general gun, family, supervised youth and mobility-impaired hunts, but never including archery or muzzleloading gun seasons). PCP air guns propelling an arrow or bolt may be used to take wild turkey during established spring turkey seasons. PCP air guns propelling a single projectile (to include a single bullet of no less than .20 caliber or an arrow or bolt) may be used to take wild turkey only during general gun seasons that already allow the take of wild turkey by area-specific rule. The above changes only apply as per area-specific regulations. See 2018-19 WMA brochures (posted online this May) for area-specific allowances.”
