As usual at this time of the year, Pyramyd Air has announced its top selling air rifles of 2017. This if the first of five categories of top selling products that Pyramyd Air will announce over the next few days. It covers air rifles up to $500.00.
Air rifles above $500.00 will be included in Pyramyd’s top selling High End Air Rifles announcement, to come…
With the agreement of Pyramyd Air, HAM brings you this list, together with some analysis of the changing composition of these top selling air rifles year-by-year.
For 2017, the John Wayne Lil Duke was the Number One best seller for Pyramyd Air. It beats-out the Daisy Red Ryder, which had held this position for the past two years. The Daisy Red Ryder now falls to eighth place.
Of course, the Lil Duke and the Red Ryder are very similar, low cost, single pump pneumatic air rifles. This means that the basic market demand continues to be very similar.
The dominance of low cost, single pump pneumatic air rifles in the “volume end” of Pyramyd Air’s market is emphasized by the second position winner. This is the Black Ops Junior Sniper Rifle – for the second year running.
As the Daisy Red Ryder is included in the list, this means that three of the top ten top selling air rifles of 2017 were single stroke pneumatics. This is up by one from 2016 and by two from 2015. These single stroke pneumatics are clearly cleaning-up at the low end of the air rifle market!
Number Three in Pyramyd Air’s list for 2017 was the Legends MP40 from Umarex. This is one of the two CO2-powered airguns in the list, the other being the Umarex Steel Force in sixth place. In 2016, no less than half of the Top Ten were CO2-powered airguns, so there’s a drop in this category back to 2015 levels, when there also were two CO2 guns in the list.

So what happened to CO2 guns? Well, possibly the answer is the increase in PCP air rifles shown by Pyramyd Air’s data…
In 2017, the Benjamin Marauder made fifth position. Although it’s been falling year-on-year in popularity, this is still a very creditable place for the most expensive air rifle in this list!
The new entries were the Umarex Gauntlet and the Diana Stormrider.
So where were the spring- and gas ram-powered break barrel guns? There’s just two of them in the 2017 list – both by Gamo. There were only two in 2016 also, down from five in 2015. Is this a sign of the times?
Given that both these models were introduced only late in the year, this means that they must have been selling incredibly fast to be included in Pyramyd Air’s list of top selling air rifles of 2017.
So far as manufacturers are concerned, the clear leader in this part of the market continues to be Umarex. Three of the 2017 Top Ten are Umarex products – although some use sub-brands used by the company. Umarex claimed three spots in 2016, too, together with two spots in 2015. So this is not a flash in the pan!
Gamo took two places in the 2017 Top Ten, up from one in previous years. Crosman/Benjamin held one slot, down from three in 2016 and two in 2015.
The full list of places is shown below.
