The WFTC 2024 World Championship is taking place now in Phoenix, Arizona. So let’s look at the guns scopes and pellets that the world-class competitors are using there…
Firstly I would like to thank the people running this great Field Target event. Match Director Garrett Kwakkenstein and his team have a great event and a great web site to support it. You can read the details at wftc2024.com.
In fact, apart from running a world-class event, they have also managed to do something that eludes most large airgun competitions. They have a list of the competitors, together with the guns scopes and pellets that they are using!
This is really interesting stuff and I’ve analyzed it here so that we can all see what equipment and ammo the top competitors in the Field Target game are using today…
To do this, I have gone to the event “Results” page and crunched the data for everyone who is shooting and scored on the first day. So this analysis does not include anyone who registered but is not attending. Nor does it include anyone who registered a score of zero on the first day.
But that still leaves 137 shooters, guns scopes and pellets for us to review. Let’s go!
Most Popular Air Rifle Manufacturers
First let’s look at the most popular air rifle manufacturers.
As we can see from the chart below, Air Arms dominates the competition! No less than 35% of all the guns in the competition were manufactured by the English company.
Of course Air Arms has both PCP and Piston guns included here, but it’s still an outstanding achievement for the company!
Steyr is in second place with 20% of the guns and Thomas holds third place with 16%
Most Popular Riflescope Manufacturers
When it comes to optics, it’s a win for Sightron! A remarkable 32% of the scopes in use come from this company. When you read Hard Air Magazine’s review of the Sightron SIII FT 10-50 x 60 scope, that comes as no surprise!
Most Popular Pellet Brands
Yes, note that here we say “pellet brands”, not manufacturers.
For although JSB-branded pellets are being used by 66% of the competitors, it’s well known that this Czech company also manufactures the pellets branded as Air Arms and FX.
That means that an incredible total of 96% of the world’s top FT shooters are using pellets manufactured by JSB. Wow!
Most Popular Rifle/Scope Combinations
Given that almost everyone is shooting JSB pellets, it’s interesting to look at the top three combinations of rifle and scope.
Remarkably we see that no less than 26% – more than a quarter of all competitors – are using one of these three gun/scope combinations.
The most popular combination is that of Air Arms with Sightron. Second is Thomas plus March. The Styer plus Sightron combination comes-in at number three.
