It’s Field Target Day at the 2024 Pyramyd Cup! The major event was the FT competition in the beautiful woods course at the Cardinal Center. That’s Andy Gonzalez in our heading photo above, with his Daystate Wolverine.
Like last year, the weather was not too hot and humid. There was no wind, but the shooters were able to keep reasonably cool. All-in-all, everyone seemed to be having great time!
As with the 100 Yard Benchrest competition, a wide variety of air rifles were to be found among the Field Target shooters. However these were generally quite different to the models found on the benches, as we’ll see here…
Generally the FT rifles are smaller and lighter than those found in Benchrest competition. This is due to the lower power requirements – either 12 or 20 Ft/Lbs maximum dependent on class – plus the need to shoot kneeling or standing in some cases.
So no Red Pandas were to be seen on Field Target duty. Instead, There were many Thomas models, as we see below.
Below, Paul Porch – the owner of Paul’s Custom Targets – was also shooting his Thomas.
Plus, of course, springers are in evidence, too. These include WFTF-compliant 12 Ft/Lb models like this Walther being shot by Leo Gonzalez.
There’s Cameron Kerndt under there somewhere in our photograph below!
However the majority of shooters are competing with PCPs. Greg Vaughan (below) is always a formidable competitor with his RAW TM-1000.
John Bagakis always shoots a Daystate Red Wolf. While most shooters excel at one discipline or another, John (below) is a very versatile shot who is always in contention in every discipline – Benchrest, Field Target and speed silhouette.
Then there’s the dreaded mandatory standing lane! This competitor has all the odds stacked in his favor with a beautiful Air Arms XTi-50FT rifle, plus Sightron S6 scope. What a great combination!
Some shooters adopt a “bended stance” for the standing shots…
Below, Kevin Sheehan from Hawke Sport Optics was competing with an unusual choice of gun. It’s an Air Arms takedown model.
While below we have an unusual air rifle with a very interesting stock. I think it’s a RAW, but I could be wrong.
Last, but not least, the whole ethos of Field Target Day at the Pyramyd Cup is of friends – old and new – getting together and having fun. That’s exactly what Tony Pellegrino (left) and Curtis Nelson were doing, as we can see here.
There’s more to come soon in HAM’s coverage of the 2024 Pyramyd Cup. Keep watching!
