Following HAM’s popular recent look at the long-running BSA R-10 SE, we’re now looking at another timeless classic PCP air rifle – the Weihrauch HW100.
As with the BSA, HAM previously reviewed the HW100 back in 2017. In fact, we tested the HW100T model, that’s the full-length rifle with thumbhole stock in .177 caliber. That gun was – and still is – owned by HAM specialist PCP air rifle tester Doug Rogers.
On test, Doug’s HW100 earned a HAM Gold Award with an outstanding 94% score. Doug still loves his HW100, but what does the HAM Team think of the current models?
So, by way of comparison, in 2024, we’re looking at the HW100 again, however in a somewhat different configuration. The current gun is a carbine with walnut sporter-style stock. It’s also in .22 caliber.
As with most models from the famous, 125-year-old, German firm, the HW100 has benefited from a steady process of improvements over the years. While most of these changes are relatively minor, together they can add-up to a product that gets better from year-to-year.
The most obvious change to the HW100 in recent years has been the incorporation of a can-style silencer that’s bonded to the barrel. “Big deal” you may say, but Weihrauch’s silencer really is impressive!
It makes the HW100 about the quietest air rifle we’ve ever tested. So – if you’re in the market for a “backyard-friendly” PCP, the HW100 now has to be high-up on the list.
Another typical Weihrauch improvement is to be seen in the scope rail. There’s a complete absence of the currently-fashionable Picatinny rails.
Logically the minimal recoil of this air rifle means they’re not required, so Weihrauch doesn’t include Picatinny rails. However they have engraved a set of graduations along the top of the rail as a guide to mounting – or re-mounting – scope rings.
Just look at that flawless finish!!!
We mounted a Hawke Airmax 30 WA SF scope on the HW. It balanced well and felt very comfortable to shoot at the 9 Lb 15 Oz total weight.
That’s an aspect of the Weihrauch that’s still as valid in 2024 as it was in 2017. The way it FEELS…
It’s a joy to look at this airgun, to hold it and to rejoice in the superb fit, finish and operation.
In the UK, it would at one time have been called “a gentleman’s gun”. That’s a big complement that means it has a sophisticated style that’s tough to define. But you know when you experience it!
And – at the risk of preempting the formal HAM test – the trigger is still superb.
Despite the current trend for “all things adjustable” PCP air rifles, this Weihrauch remains a gun to just take out of the box and shoot as it came from the factory. And there’s many people who want to do just that.
If that’s you, you’ll want to read the complete HAM review that’s coming soon…
