There’s no doubt about it. Umarex made a splash at the 2024 SHOT Show Range Day! The company chose this event as the venue to display the new AirJavelin FishR. It’s a bow fishing PCP!
And – of course – as it was Range Day, I got to shoot this latest product from the Umarex stable. Is it an airgun? Well, I don’t know, but it’s definitely a PCP and I’ve never shot anything like it before.
The heading photograph shows me shooting the FishR for the first time. As it’s intended for short range – think 10 Feet – use, there’s no absolute need for any sights. However I was informed that it does work well with a laser sight.
In fact, I’m actually shooting down into a fish. Well, OK, it was a dummy fish. But Umarex had set-up a large tank to shoot the FishR into.
In fact, it was full of 4,000 gallons of water. That’s close to 17 tons of H2O set-up in a shooting range in the Nevada desert. Yes, that’s how Umarex made a splash at the 2024 SHOT Show Range Day!
Never having shot into water before, and knowing nothing of fishing, my first shot was a miss. The diffraction of the water makes aiming an acquired skill.
However, I did score a hit with the second shot, as you can see below. There’s one dummy fish that won’t mess with a FishR in future!
Once the fish is speared, it’s hauled back in. The spear is retained with a line that’s attached to the gun. Then the FishR is re-loaded, cocked and ready to fire at the next target.
There was a lot of interest in this new Umarex product. In fact, it’s a whole new category of air-powered shooting device.
Also at the range, we had the chance to test-fire the forthcoming new Umarex AER16. This is an “AEG-type” selective-fire BB gun.The AR looks are intentional!
This was also great fun to shoot…

The SHOT Show Industry Day At The Range is an invitation-only event that’s held the day before the SHOT Show. It takes place at the Boulder Rifle And Pistol Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
It’s a big event with many companies taking the opportunity to let journalists and buyers “range test” all sorts of – primarily – firearms. Umarex was the only “airgun company” present.
A small part of the event can be seen below. There’s a continuous rattle of firearms of all types and calibers shooting everything from full-auto fun to 1,000 Yard precision. That’s why everyone is wearing ear defenders in all the photographs above.
Tomorrow we move indoors to the formal part of the 2024 SHOT Show.
