Yes, the Weihrauch HW30S is not exactly a new air rifle. In fact, it’s a classic design that dates back many years. But that does not mean that it’s not a great purchase for today’s shooter. When I visited Airguns of Arizona recently, these guns were literally flying out of the door!
In fact, the HW30 has received continuous upgrades over the years – including this year. This keeps it popular choice with many buyers looking for a simple, “no frills”, yet high quality air rifle.
Also, at less than 39 Inches long and just 5.5 Lbs weight, it’s also not too big or heavy. The “Rekord” trigger has an excellent reputation and that – combined with easy breakbarrel cocking -makes it ideal for all the family and a great change from the many large, heavy air rifles – of all types – that feature in the market today.
Of course, the HW30S is not a powerhouse. But it’s not intended to be. In fact, the maximum Muzzle Velocity claimed by the manufacturer is 620 FPS in .177 caliber.
So this is a plinker or informal target shooter, rather than a hunter. It’s a choice for the person looking for a high quality, straightforward shooter – not the “biggest bang for the buck” choice with all the “bells and whistles”.
The metal finish is beautiful. It’s matched only by the quality of the beautifully- figured and -checkered wood stock. The stock is made in Italy by specialist stock maker Minelli, as is indicated by the “M in a circle” logo on the wood.
Weihrauch is a company that believes in providing high quality open sights. The front tunnel sight is supplied with no less than six interchangeable inserts. (One is in the foresight in the photograph below).
Not only that, but the windage- and elevation-adjustable rear sight has no less than four differently-shaped notches that can be selected by the shooter.
In order to fully test the accuracy potential of this air rifle, the HAM Team mounted a Hawke Airmax 4-12 x 40 AO riflescope. At 12.9 Inches long, this is absolutely the longest scope that could be mounted on the Weihrauch HW30S.
Yes, this could be a limitation, but – realistically – it’s unlikely that any HW30 owner would want to mount any optic that’s much longer or heavier than this.
We used a Medium-height one-piece mount for the scope. It provides a nice low eyeline while still giving clearance – just! – between the scope and the compression tube of the gun. Also we removed the rear sight assembly so as not to obscure the sight picture through the scope in any way. It’s really easy to do!
Looking from the rear, the buttstock is finished with a rubber buttpad. Another quality part, of course!
Everything about the HW30 looks to be designed for easy, fun shooting with a strong quality focus. Stand by! HAM will be bringing you a full review of the HW30S very soon…
