The Smith & Wesson M&P range has expanded over the years. So – to reflect this – there’s now a new M&P 9 BB pistol. And it’s in stock right now!
Hard Air Magazine tested the M&P 40 BB pistol back in 2017. We found a lot to like in this field-strippable, blowback CO2-powered airgun. It earned a HAM Silver Award.
The good news is that the M&P 9 M2.0 uses an improved, drop-free, 18-round magazine. This has a higher capacity than the M&P 40’s mag and includes a BB follower hold-open.
This looks like it will overcome the only aspect of the M&P 40 that the HAM Team criticized in our review. Having a BB follower hold open will likely make the M&P 9 MUCH easier to load!
In terms of the firearms originals, the M&P 40 is a .40 cal model, whereas the M&P 9 M2.0 chambers the 9 mm cartridge. Of course, both BB guns shoot the same caliber steel BBs, so there’s no caliber difference in the case of the CO2-powered airguns.
In line with the firearm originals, the M&P 9 BB pistol has larger areas of stippling on the pistol grip. It also imitates the firearm by providing a choice of three interchangeable backstraps.
These backstraps can be changed to allow the pistol to best fit the shooter’s hand. This was also a feature of the S&W M&P 40 BB gun and it worked very well.
There have also obviously been other internal product improvements between the M&P 40 and M&P 9 BB gun models. The new one has a maximum velocity specification of 400 FPS, compared to the 300 FPS of the older model.
Although HAM has not tested the M&P 9 – yet! – it certainly looks as if this will be an impressive airgun and a worthwhile upgrade over the M&P 40.
