There’s more airgun pellet news from H&N. The recently-announced Baracuda 18 pellets are now in dealer stock in the USA. So Hard Air magazine decided to take a close look.
The Baracuda 18 pellets are available in .22 caliber only. At least at present. They’re supplied in the company’s excellent standard screw-top tins, with 200 pellets per tin.
Individual pellet weight is 18.13 Grains, this being combined with a head diameter of 5.52 mm. That diameter equates to 0.217 Inches.
Being named in the H&N Baracuda family indicates that these new pellets are primarily intended by the German manufacturer for hunting use.
A close-up look shows a long skirt design, typical of Baracuda pellets. This is combined with a slight point to the domed head of these diabolo pellets and a quite aggressive waist.
In the next photograph, below, we compare a new Baracuda 18 to a 14.66 Grain Field Target Trophy Power pellet. The “Power” series of H&N pellets are copper-coated versions of the lead pellets of the same basic name.
This comparison clearly shows the design differences between the two pellets.
H&N is positioning the new .22 caliber 18.3 Grain pellets as being intermediate between the 14.66 Grain Field Target Trophies and 21.14 Grain Baracuda Match ammo.
To make a visual comparison of that, the photograph below shows the Baracuda 18 in the center. A Field Target Trophy pellet is on the left, a Baracuda Match on the right.
This visual comparison also has interest in the light of the Ballistic Coefficient specifications for these three pellets. Using H&N factory BC numbers, the new 18.13 Grain Baracudas come-in at a BC of 0.029. This compares to a BC of 0.019 for the .22 caliber Field Target Trophies and 0.039 for the 21.14 Grain Baracuda Match pellets.
That’s more confirmation of the company’s positioning of the new pellet design as being suitable for general-purpose use.
