Today we’re shooting the Umarex Origin PCP air rifle. Given the “First PCP” owner that Umarex is appealing-to with the Origin, this is not a typical structured HAM accuracy test. Rather it’s the sort of “let’s get the new gun out and have some fun” type of test that any new owner might try.
Let’s take a look at the results…
First I sighted-in the Leapers UTG 3-12 x 32 Bugbuster scope that I had mounted on the Origin. The intention here was to use an appropriately-priced scope that is likely to be a common choice among Origin buyers.
Well, “sighted-in” is a little too precise a description! “Got on the paper” is more accurate. I wasn’t so interested in hitting the bull as being “close enough” and seeing the group!
For ammo, I had chosen to use JSB Jumbo 15.89 Grain pellets.
Why?
Well, I knew from our shootdown test that this Origin had a Muzzle Velocity of around 945 – 980 FPS when shooting 14.3 Grain Crosman Premier Hollow Point pellets. We also know from HAM’s mega accuracy analysis that this FPS is likely to be somewhat high for best accuracy.
So I guessed that around 16 Grains would be a good pellet weight to bring the velocity down somewhat.
A moment’s investigation in the “HAM Ammo Dump” found these 15.89 Grain JSB Jumbo Diabolos. Although HAM has not yet tested this pellet, it’s clear from other testing that JSBs are likely to be a good choice for accuracy in most PCPs.
In fact, these heavier pellets brought the Muzzle Velocity down to about 870 FPS. That represents about 26.7 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy. Very satisfactory!
So I set-out a target at 25 Yards, loaded 10 JSBs into the Origin’s magazine and fired – fairly rapidly – from a rested position.
Below we see the results. A half-inch Center-To-Center group for 10 pellets. That’s certainly “minute of little critter” accuracy for a hunter and definitely good enough for me for a gun straight out of the box!
Delighted with the results, I re-loaded and repeated the exercise. This time the group was very similar but smaller – about 0.4-Inches C-T-C.
To put that in perspective, that second group represents 10 shots well inside a Quarter at 25 Yards.
And don’t forget that this was the first pellet I tried shooting the Umarex Origin!
There could be an even more accurate pellet for this gun, just waiting to be found. In addition, there are plenty of more accurate shooters than me out there, who could probably improve on this group with exactly the same gun, scope and pellets.
Overall, I believe that a new owner with the Origin as his first PCP would be extremely happy with these results!
Doubtless, I could improve the group size further by more practice with the gun. After all, these were the first 20 shots I had fired from the Origin with any intent to understand accuracy…
This brief exercise proved that there’s more to like about the Umarex Origin than just easy pumping. It clearly can shoot, too!
Again, it’s very unlikely that I just happened to chance upon the best pellet/gun combination from my somewhat unscientific selection process.
Further investigation is likely to find even better accuracy from an alternative pellet type. Most likely better accuracy would result if selected pellets were used, too. Like most any new Origin owner is likely to do, I just loaded the pellets straight from the tin for this test.
