We first saw the new SIG M17 ASP CO2 pistol in Hard Air Magazine back in August, when attending the Press Launch for the forthcoming ASP20 Air Rifle at SIG’s New Hampshire headquarters. As you can see, I liked it!
Now the first production model has reached the HAM offices and we can take a closer look at it.
The M17 is – of course – the US Army’s latest pistol. So SIG SAUER has also introduced this pellet-firing version for use as a training tool. And we can shoot it for fun, too!
The SIG M17 ASP CO2 pistol is a blowback, semi-auto pistol with a 430 FPS Muzzle Velocity specification and SIG’s innovative, 20-round, RPM pellet magazine. It’s also field-strippable – another first for SIG AIR.
Our CO2-powered version has the extended magazine. This is comfortable to hold and provides space inside the grip for a new type of magazine – one which combines both the CO2 cartridge and a separate, detachable, belt-fed pellet magazine.
The SIG M17 ASP CO2 pistol combines – for the first time – SIG AIR’s belt magazine with their cam lever CO2 loading system into a single sub assembly. Previously the cam level loading system has been built-in to the frame of the pistol.
The 20-shot pellet magazine pushes down into the top of the magazine casting, right next to the 12 Gram CO2 cartridge. We’ll look at this innovative design further in our full review of the SIG M17 ASP CO2 pistol in the near future.
As expected, the SIG M17 ASP CO2 pistol has a short Picatinny rail in front of the trigger guard. We mounted a Leapers UTG Subcompact Laser there with plenty of space to spare.
It’s possible to see the design progress in the way SIG AIR has utilized the RPM belt magazine concept by comparing the magazines in the photograph below.
The MCX/MPX mag was the first version holding 30 pellets. The P320 mag shows this concept reduced to fit into an an air pistol frame.
The M17 version shows it reduced in size still further to become a 20-round belt system that can fit into the pistol’s magazine. That’s very impressive design development, in the HAM Team’s opinion. Hey honey, I shrunk the RPM system!
So the new SIG M17 ASP CO2 pistol joins the family of SIG AIR Advanced Sport Pellet products. It certainly looks the part, as we see below…
