Over the years, the Crosman All American Field Target Competition has built up into one of the highlights of the competitive airgun shooting calendar. This year, the 2018 CAAFTC follows the successful pattern of previous events. Today was Day One of the competition.
Hosted as usual at the dedicated airgun range at the Rochester Brooks Trap and Skeet Club. The 2018 CAAFTC benefits from the beautiful scenery and – usually – wonderful weather in rural Up-State New York Today.
Today’s windy weather certainly made conditions challenging for the competitors!
This first day of the 2018 CAAFTC started with people from all over the country – and some from outside it – meeting and greeting old friends. Some made new ones, too! As any attendee at airgun shoots will confirm, this camaraderie is one of the great attractions of these events!
Below, some competitors tell the world of their interest…
The practice range was open in the morning. There was a superabundance of targets laid out for competitors to make the final corrections and adjustments to their guns!
Below, an exotic collection of British PCPs from Daystate and Air Arms on the practice range.
Then, at Noon, the 2018 CAAFTC really got under way with the Quigley Bucket Challenge.
“The Quigley” is an airgun version of the scene from the movie Quigley Down Under in which unforgettable, as Quigley (Tom Selleck), successfully shoots a 17-inch bucket at approximately 550 yards.
At the 2018 CAAFTC, the “bucket” is just 1.75-inches in diameter an has to be hit at 55 yards.
Shooters use Crosman Challenger 10-meter guns (6.5 Ft/Lb limit) with peep sights and have 5 shots. This one went down to the wire with three shooters tying – a shoot-out was required.
The Field Target Pistol Match opened at 2.00PM. It’s a long way to those targets with a pistol in that wind!
Look at the tell tale in the photo below…
This Pistol FT Match showed a huge variety of air pistols, with competitors using everything from humble Crosmans to exotic Thomas pistols. The only thing more exotic was the range of shooting stances used by the pistol shooters at the 2018 CAAFTC!
Tomorrow brings the first day of the main Field Target match, together with the PyramydAir Gunslynger speed silhouette shoot. Look out for our Day Two report on the 2018 CAAFTC tomorrow…
